Traditional Medicine and Biodiversity

Because, the community's forest (protected forest including scared forest) is highly important for the target beneficiaries borth in terms of health - collecting herbs as medicine - and households' economic improvement - collecting NTFPs for cash, the project therefore promote the medicine plants as the entry point for the conservation.

Major activities are:
1. Improve existing community land and forest allocation map
2. Re-establish community protected area use and management regulations
3. Put up the map in the village and signs to indicate the protected forest
4. Study visit on community-based NTFPs use and management
5. Sharing and networking lesson learnt for the policy makers
6. Village saving and credit scheme set up
7. Livestock producer groups establishment
8. Plants inventory - publish book with picture and description of plants that available within community
protected area with its social and economic value

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Project funding is managing in participatorily method among project support team, village project management and beneficiaries. The expenditure of project fund will be informed time to time to the beneficiaries. Plan of activities will be planned participatory way

Capacity - Building Component

Project will organize training on protected forest management; NTFPs marketing; livestock raising; study visit on community-based NTFPs use and management Project cycle and financial management will be also organized for community project management team.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The activities like livestock raising and village saving and credit proposed by beneficiaries are main livelihood improvement. The marketing of NTFPs training course will be designed and implement.

Notable Community Participation

The concept brought by community authorities during the local government meeting at the district (Namor) because, there are several issues araised among this targeted village and surrounding villages on the use and managment of protected forest.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

This project has been implementing with indigenous ethnic call Kmou-lue. The Kmou-lue is one of poorest community within Lao PDR, living at the middle level of the mountain. There were several meetings held seperately among men and women before the project could be designed

Gender Focus

Women and men will equally targeted through separate identification of needs. The project community management team includes woman and women will be involve all level of project implementation

Project Results

The 500 ha of 1100 ha community common land/forest was done as sustainable observation land/forest for sustainable use of herbs. The allocation completed through GPS mapping. The map was set up in community and also presented to local government for the official registration, together with the community a community land/forest use and management regulation was established and is officially approved by provincial authority. Overall, there are 312 participants attended the series of meetings that were conducted by the project. Participants composed of 264 men and 48 women with an overall attendance of 312 people. The survey of the surrounding protected areas were completed in the first month of 2011. A marker posts were placed at the boundary of the area surveyed to established size of the area. The project team accurately surveyed 234 hectares with marker placed around the surveyed area representing the actual size of the forest. The forest was surveyed to inventory existing medicinal plant species at three points of the forest. Survey was conducted at different occasions from March to April. The project cooperated with National Research Department (a government institution) to register potential traditional medicine. The list generated at least 120 registered medical plants and 148 non-registered medicinal herbs in the surveyed forest. Mapping of the whole 234 ha protected area was successful and two protected area signage was placed in different sections, one in the vicinity of the forest and other is at the village. A stakeholder meeting was also carried out to inform communities of policies and importance of biodiversity conservation at the designated protected areas and attendance of the community was relatively high. Awareness raising on forestry policies was also given to neighboring villages. Technical training was provided to families who would like to engage in livestock raising. Twenty four families were chosen to spearhead the livestock raising project to supplement their existing livelihood. Sharing experiences across the project proponent is being done bi-annual of the of project lifespan.
