Community Biogas Demonstration project Oke Aro, Lagos State
Community Biogas Demonstration project Oke Aro, Lagos State
Project seeks to demonstrate the reduction in the environmental pollution from the Pig farm at Oke-Aro, and the conversion of the solid animal waste being generated from the site into useful form of biogas for cooking and electricity generation for the farmers and community, to show reduction in the production of greenhouse gases, especially methane. The Oke-Aro Pig Farm Estate is such that the waste exceeds the carrying capacity of local ecosystems and are potential causes of pollution and health problems related to their organic matter, nutrients, pathogens, odour, dust, and airborne microorganisms. There have been direct discharges onto the land and surface water. This practice has considerable consequences on the environment including adverse effects on air quality, water supplies, aquatic life, health and well being of the people, particularly the rural communities.
Some of the project activities include sensitization and awareness creation, site assessment and preparation, capacity building and training, design and construction of biodigester, Biogas production and testing of biogas, Installation and testing of Generator, project Review, monitoring and Evaluation, reporting and Handover to community for sustainability. It involves the pig farmers and the women group of the community.
