Community-driven Aquatic Biodiversity Restoration Programme in Kuta, a downstream Community in Shiroro, Niger State , North-Central, Nigeria.
Project goal is to restore endangered fish species through sustainable rural fish farming. Project objectives include; To address growing decline and gradual extinction of the cat and tilapia fish species through controlled culture method as a livelihood empowerment strategy (aquaculture), and to provide an alternative livelihood practice for women of Shiroro community with a view to addressing their frustration at low agricultural yields arising from climate-impacted farming system. Moreover, the over-dependent and unsustainable farming practice has resulted in land degradation and failed yields which has provided opportunities for other forms of livelihoods like fishing. Regrettably, fishing industry in the community is challenged by several factors including: Loss of aquatic biodiversity as a result of increase chemical use in the dam and the reversed water current/movement due to entrapment of water from different water bodies and Poor fishing harvest of catfish (predominant fish species) due to increased rate of fishing as a result of deepened poverty
Project activities are; Consensus Building and planning Meetings with all stakeholders in the community to consolidate previous informal interactions, consultation with Local Government office and other key state government institutions to build partnerships, composition of Project management team, site identification, land clearance and preparation, establishment of associated project (provision of steady source of clean water source ?borehole, Engagement of a fish farm expert for technical support, Capacity Building, market Network and sales co-ordination, Establishment of cooperative for women. Fish farmers, women and youth of the community are involved in carrying out the project.
