Communicating Low Cost Energy Saving Techniques for Sustainable Mangrove Utilization in Akwa?Ibom State.
The goal of this project is to initiate low cost saving energy techniques for the enhancement of environmental sustanaibility and the main objective is to install fish processing and preservation ovens. . In Nigeria, mangroves are used for charcoal, firewood, wood distillation, poles making for building and flooring of houses e.t.c. Recently, the mangrove forest of Nigeria?s coastal States has become highly degraded and depleted thus, limiting the ability of the mangrove vegetations to fulfill its numerous functions. The mangrove forest has come under severe pressure from fishing and farming communities which inhabit this area. Traditional food processing methods such as smoking, drying, salting, frying and fermenting are employed to preserve fish for future use. However, Fish smoking the common technology comes with significant drawbacks such as fuel inefficiency, air pollution, failure to dry fish evenly, longer drying time and the use of mangrove wood which results in coastal deforestation.
Project activities include; Form networks with all stakeholders, develop a do-it-yourself user manuals in English & ethnic languages with diagrams and video cassettes, carry out training sessions for ad-hoc staff to be involved in project work, establish environmental education centres, encourage cooperative members to replicate ovens, obtain and analyze feedback on project activities and carry out post project evaluation, it involves the fishermen and women of the community.
