Sustainable Mangement and Conservation of Marine and Coastal Resources in Vanga Location, Kenya
The proposed project is driven by the need to sustainably manage the marine and coastal resources found within Vanga and related biodiversity which are important from an eco-logical, socio- economic and physiological perspective. The area hosts the largest tracts of mangrove forests in South Coast. This important resource however faces various threats which include but not limited to clear cutting of mangrove, poor agricultural practices, resource use conflicts and limited awareness among the local community members of applicable national laws and policies on participatory natural resource management.
The expected project results are; i) community forest association (VAJIKI) undertaking sustainable management of the vast mangrove forest and associated resources found within the three villages of Jimbo, Vanga and Kiwengu ii) rehabilitated and restored degraded mangrove sites and forest improved by 70%. This will be achieved by establishing tree nurseries for mangrove seedlings and planting an area of 10ha , iii) improved income levels in various households by adopting environmentally sound alternative income generating activities and iv) improved land use practices and increased farm production, improved soil and water management measures.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
? Both the identified community based community groups (CBOs) were consulted in the development of the project proposal and assisted in providing information on the various issues discussed.
? The community will play a major role in implementation project activities. As the primary beneficiaries of the project, the activities have been designed in such a way that they are the implementers, actively involved in executing the activities on their farms and by providing their resources such as labor.
Gender Focus
In Vanga and Jimbo areas, a majority of the members for the two CBOs comprise of women. This is because most of the men are fishermen who go to sea everyday and the women remain at home to watch over the children. Formation of CBOs has enabled the women become involved in environmental conservation activities, gained skills and knowledge and get income from various projects brought in these areas.
This has empowered the women and has so far impacted positively to their society as they have passed on their knowledge to their families which have had double impact. This has enhanced environmental conservation activities and improved sanitation among other issues.
