I. First progress report (December 28, 2010):
Activities undertaken:
Launching capacity building activities to reconfirm the courses of projects and formulate action plans with following stakeholders:
- Project committee members
- Tambol Administrative Organization
- Target population in 10 communities
- Community leaders

Results of activities:
1.About 200 participants from both public and private sector gaining insight of project course witnessed through an emergence of collaboration and ability to formulate action for target population 2. Additional 9 communities applying to participate in the project and being accepted

Project Communication:
Under the reporting period, the project did not carry out any communication activities, but meetings to reconfirm and formulate action plans. However, the project planned to produce tracts/leaflets and launch a community radio to provide moral support and share relevant experiences with target population in the following period.

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
1. It was an enriched experience as well as a challenge for the project since the period fell under sowing season and 90 % of target population was not used to the project initiatives thus required more strategic collaboration from stakeholders. Furthermore, responsible staff was not available due to ailment for two months.
2. In order to ensure favourable result of capacity building, especially for community leaders and youth groups, the project had to resort to supports/collaboration from Tambol Administrative Organization
3. Coordination with various stakeholders would be better secured once those with authority were fully participating and supporting.
4. Persistent holistic coordination was imperative and to develop visions and perspectives of communities. Communities would be able to understand themselves and relevant situation through the essence of agriculture and food security.

Project Expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 203,515 out of the first disbursement of THB: 231,001.91.

II. Second progress report (August 5, 2011):
Activities undertaken:
1. Keeping on capacity building through development of paradigm among targeted population
2. Promoting the development of food resources base in marginal forest, paddy fields and community

Results of activities:
1. Emergence of the followings:
-Food base recovery plans under the oversight of 95 members with clear strategy
-Three groups undertaking environmentally-friendly agriculture in project location
-20 pilot farmers and their database
-One network with 19 groups
-One welfare fund for agriculture
2. Additional 450 trees in an area of about 32 ha
3. Evinced increased mutual understanding and cooperation community members in targeted location

Project Communication:
The project was made more visible and understood through
1. community forums
2. community radio under the programme ? Voice of Farmers?.

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
1. A project with several targeted villages needed more time and frequency of visits to ensure intimate relationships and smooth cooperation. Classification or division targeted area for easy field visits was advisable.
2. Since the reporting period fell on sowing seasons, community participation was less than expected.
3. Some activities such as tree plantation could not be carried out during dry season, due to disagreement from communities
4. The project encouraged the 95-member committee to play a full role so that the implementation plan would be carried out smoothly.

Project Expense:
The project reported the accumulated expense of THB: 423,538 out of the sum of first & second disbursement of THB: 453,521.95.

III. Monitoring Visit by NC/NSC (October 7, 2011):
Findings & Observation:
At the grantee?s office in Wapipathum District?s Tambol Nongsaeng, about 15 community members who are core leaders of the project gave a brief explanation to the visiting team over project plans and how leaders from various villages made commitment to demonstrate sustainable land use approach. Many members seemed to display increased capacity possessed even before the beginning of the project. Capacity and energetic cooperation of community leaders was fairly Notably. Also notably was a brief discussion with 5 representatives of youth group making commitment to make living by farming, instead of migrating into towns working for industrial/commercial sectors.

The grantee also implement other related livelihood activities, supported by both domestic and international donors. Therefore, it was not a surprise to see community members displaying capacity and offering thoughts and idea in holistic community development.

A paddy field in Baan(village) Kayorm, one of the 20 targeted villages, was briefly visited. The plot of about 4 ha was to be used as one of the project models. Before, the plot had been intensively applied with chemical fertilizers but now the amount of chemicals was gradually reduced and applied with organic fertilizer and manure. Marginal areas in the field were planted with native fruit trees and other edible species. The owner seemed to be knowledgeable about a new approach on maintaining the grown species.

Another plot a few kilometers from Baan Kayom-also a project model- was visited. It was an area of about 5 ha mainly covered by paddy with a portion allocated for integrated farming. The notorious native species, eucalyptus, was seen standing .According to the owner, the species would be rid off and replaced with native edible species. Small scale husbandry and aquaculture were also practiced in the plot from which manure was being used for paddy.

Interacting with project leaders and two model farmers, the visiting team agreed that the project was implemented smoothly as planned. It was good to see some farmers realizing and beginning to reverse the threats to rice-and-fish culture of the Mekong River. Even though the outcomes of project were not yet evidently witnessed, they seemed to be on their ways. If only half of the 95 targeted plots were sustained with the project approaches, the outcomes would loom large.

1. Increased capacity of 95 farmers with increased insight on sustainable agriculture - persistently conducting participatory process at least once two months , and coming up with 19 community action plans
2. Systematical management of 64 ha of marginal forest land with 250 trees reforested and thriving
3. Emergence of 50 plots being developed into self-reliant agricultural plots with at least 7 groups as models
5. Compilation of project knowledge and experience
6. Emergence of parties to draft strategy for community food security consistent with local ecosystems.
7. Project activities and respective results in conjunction with increased capacity of targeted population prompting Mahasarakharm Provincial Office of Husbandry to support 52 cows and 56 water buffaloes
8. Produced 200-300 sets of dissemination materials for replication and up-scaling


Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
