Participatory Waste Management / Songkhla Community Natural Resources and Environment Protection Volunteer Network
Implementing NGO/CBO:
Songkhla Community Natural Resources and Environment Protection Volunteer Network (SCOMNET): Established on 7 August 2004 with objectives to launch activities on building capacity of networks and managing local natural resources and the environment. The network is mandated to operate closely with local administrative organizations. Nine members from each village are selected and appointed by the province to be members of the network.

Location of project:
12 communities under territory of Ranode Tambol Municipality, Satingphra Tambol Municipality, Muang Ngarm Tambol Municipality, Singhanakhorn Municipality and Bor Tru Tambol Municipality in Songkhla Province, an integrated ecosystems of the South China Sea. Current total waste in the location is about 37 tons/day with estimated 9 tons/day as a source of persistent organic pollutants.

Target Population:
12,241 members from 3,068 families in project location who earn living through providing civil service, agriculture, small business and fishery, where 1,330 members are direct participants/ beneficiaries. The per capita income is THB: 48,559.

Main Activities:
1. Launching capacity building on community waste management by training ,workshop and study tours
2.Demonstrating waste management approaches by separation/reduction of waste and garbage bank
3. Conducting participatory evaluation

Main Anticipated Result:
1. Increased capacity of at least 80 % of targeted population witnessed by ability to put into practice lessons learnt from capacity-building activities
2. Emergence of five garbage banks in project location operational consistently with established rule
3. Increased income of community by 30 % from garbage banks
4. Witnessed reduction of waste including sources of POPs by 40 % including minimal waste burning in communities
5. Production of compost and ionic plasma for community use.
