I. First progress report (June 17, 2011):
Activities undertaken:
1. Launching capacity building on waste separation by training and study tours

Results of activities:
1. Evinced increased capacity of 25 core leaders on solid waste separation, garbage bank establishment, earth worm raising, and adding value to garbage
2. Solid waste recycle flee market being organized every fourth Sunday of November 10-March 11 with total waste of 13,981.34 kg. with THB: 6,000 being traded
3. One garbage bank being established in schools
4. One earth worm regeneration pit being established for redistribution
5. One poster being made to make the project more visible.

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
The project referred to the following as problems and issues:

1.The community was rather slow to learn about the right method of waste separation. This was addressed by a more official learning forum, i.e. community forum.
2.The participation rate during the reporting period was still low. This was addressed by reaching out to other sectors such as small vendors ( coffee, small shops)

Project Expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 53,200 out of the first disbursement of THB: 70,773.17.

II. Monitoring visit (June 29, 2011):
Findings & Observation:
Ruam Paed Phatthana, a semi-urban community, is located in a coastal ecosystems with diverse livelihood activities of members: general public and private services, small business, and fishery for those members residing along the coast and small agricultural practice inland (gardens and orchards).

Interacting through meeting and discussion with 7 community leaders at the grantee office , the visiting team found that proposed activities had been carried out as planned, with respective satisfactory outputs. Following capacity building through study tours, one garbage bank and other facilities were established and functioned systematically. A simple facility to collect solid waste from project members and add value unto them was witnessed in backyard of the grantee office. A simple technology to raise earthworm- also a result of capacity building activity- was witnessed. The technology was proven to contribute to making organic fertilizer by decomposing and soil conditioning in agricultural practice.

In order to find more about carried out activities, the visiting team witnessed another garbage bank operational in Baan Bangsaray School, one of the two community schools participating in project activities. With over 700 students, the school staff trained students to manage the bank successfully so far. It was related that the school was also open for outsider who wished to sell their waste such as plastic bottles.

In spite of time constraint, the visiting team learnt a lot about the community context and enthusiasm of project leaders including school staff to carry out project activities. There was, however, some minor issues on optimal participation of the entire community members and on punctuality of members to bring their waste to the bank as scheduled. To address them, project leaders would bring the issues to meetings at all level in the community.

Note: the visiting team was told that two members of GEF evaluating team had visited the project on June 17, 2011, as a part of the evaluation of the two macro GEF projects in the Sea of East Asia.

III. Second progress report (December 8, 2011):
Activities undertaken:
1. Continuing launching capacity building on waste separation by training and study tours

4. Conducting participatory evaluation

Results of activities:
1. Increased number of community members participating in project activities to 112
2. During April-October , 24,785.6 kg of recycled waste received
3. 97 members demonstrating understanding about the merit of project and SGP
4. One learning centre established

Project Communication:
The same communication systems/ channels were being utilized to make the project more visible /understood.

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
1.The project referred to community participation as an issue. Optimal participation as planned had not been witnessed. The issue was being addressed in the bi-monthly of the municipality and by seeking collaboration with neighboring communities with in the municipality.
2. Waste buyers did not prefer certain kinds of waste, especially, milk box made from paper. This was addressed by coordination with other agencies in the provincial town of Cholburi who preferred to buy. Such boxes were able to process into roofing materials. So, community members paid more attention to recycle the milk boxes.

Project Expense:
The project report the accumulated expense of THB:81,082.5 out of the sum of first & second disbursement of THB:139,377.05.

1. Increased technical capacity of at least 80 % of targeted population witnessed through ability to be resource persons for others and put into practice and replicate in two community schools and the municipality
2. At least 50 % of staff members working in offices participating in waste separation
3. Reduction of municipality waste by 30 % and with minimal or no waste burning in the communities, with recycle items of 70,046 kg
4. Estimated increase of income of participating families by 10 %
5. The community being a centre for dissemination of experience on holistic waste management-providing training to other communities and schools in the municipality

Project Communication:
Nothing special was reported.

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
The project planned to sustain and upgrade the activities by processing solid waste into usable or gift product. In addition, through the ionic plasma technology, the project would expand activities to reduce liquid waste from households of fisherman which were on a seafront.

Currently, the project established a share system for reuse/recycle with dividend for purchasing members. The system would ensure incentives and conservation awareness of members, thus sustainability of the project.

Experience , Lessons Learnt , Problems and Issues:
The project concluded that the weekly organized flee market for reuse/recycle was not very successful. In solving this problem, project committee adopted another approach by turning the office of the grantee into the market. The office was able to provide more facilities for community members who wished to participate. Demonstration of the use of ionic plasma in the office premises was a gain for community waste management.
