I. First progress report (December 29, 2010):
Activities undertaken:
1. Launching capacity building through seminars and sharing experience within project location, re: improving and conserving local genetic diversity, resources inventorying, and propagating
2. Demonstrating and putting into practice the built capacity through resources inventorying, and species propagation
3. Conducting participatory evaluation

Results of activities:
1. Acquired data & information for 34 households each of 30 plant species with 111 species surveyed & recorded
2. Additional 15 species as a result of launching development & conservation activities of 34 households
3. Established 3 plots for species collection, with one appropriate as a learning place, and the other two for seed harvesting
4. Increased technical & institutional capacity of 18 project members witnessed by capacity to share experience, identify and compare diversity of species some of which being threatened
5. Additional support from the Department of Environment Quality Promotion and Community Organization Development Institute by establishment of Tambol Jomthong as a local biodiversity learning place with dissemination materials and relevant training

Project Communication:
Under this period, the project held meetings with both local and national reporters and mass media which resulted in wider visibility of the project through:

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
Since target communities had not given priority to policy-wise activities, conservation of local biodiversity was considered as too complicate to grasp. There was no evidence indicating local capacity to link monopolized agricultural system to climate change. Loss of local biological diversity directly linked to local food security, while working to build capacity of communities depends upon crop seasons. To alleviate the issue, persistent capacity building with added technical essence appeared to be effective.

Project Expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 266,395 out of the first disbursement of THB: 311,563.84.

II. Monitoring Visit (July 21, 2011):
Findings & Observation:
At the Community Learning Centre on Genetic Resources of the project in Muang District?s Baan (village) Chomthong, one of the participating villages, the visiting team interacted with 20 representatives of targeted population from three districts. Project leaders and representatives took turns to tell undertaken activities and evinced results, with photos and booklets displaying community in action. The slogan for these community members was ?building self-sufficient families and cooler earth?. Enthusiasm and demonstrated capacity of the members were fairly notable. Everyone, it appeared, was able to express something tangible about the project.

Touring about the village, which was situated along the Nan River, and visiting orchards of communities, it was found that the location was once rich in landraces and fresh water species. Modern irrigation development launched in the past four decades had resulted in expansion of paddy fields encroaching landrace area- prompting conservation activities from communities. Four plots of project members visited contained at least one different threatened species, and several kinds of landraces of both nutritious and medicinal value. As to other seasonal species for consumption, the communities confirmed that they were chemical-free. Together with planning sustainable use of landraces, the project had launched the same activities for native fresh water fishes the result of which was fairly satisfactory.

The visiting team discussed and agreed to the progress of activities and notable capacities of communities. There were several organizations as project stakeholders including government agencies, NGO ,CSOs and independent organization such as Community Organization Development Institute.

III. Second progress report (July 25, 2011):
Activities undertaken:
1. Keeping on launching capacity building through seminars and sharing experience within project location, re: improving and conserving local genetic diversity, resources inventorying, and propagating
2. Keeping on demonstrating and putting into practice the built capacity through resources inventorying, and species propagation

Results of activities:
1. Evinced self-confidence on communication & dissemination of project activities among 133 project members witnessed by ability to explain sustainable locally appropriate agricultural practices to public
2. Exchanged 144 species of landraces numbering 3,150 tress being distributed for propagation in project location
3. Increased awareness of 101 families regarding ? cooling down the earth? maintaining and planting more landraces in the plots
4. Increased skill of communities on bleeding of two native threatened species with 300,000 juveniles to be released back into habitat and for propagation among community members

Project Communication:
The project was made more visible and understood as follows:
1. The TV Thai PBS produced a documentary on ? Synergy of Self-Sufficiency Communities? at project location which was aired on
14 May 2011.
2. During this reporting period, the TV Thai PBS was producing another story on ? Landraces and Legend of the Nan and Khwae Noi River.
3. The signboards were posted in front of 34 plots and families
4. The visitations from two study groups of 80 members
5. The exhibition at grantee filed office

Experience and Lessons Learnt:
Collecting and storing seeds or genes of landraces was a kind of local or indigenous knowledge which varied in form of storage and times for use. Even though some types of knowledge was revived, the communities still needed skilled so that the collection and storage would be more systematic. Besides, communities needed to understand more of the value of these landraces and threats upon them.

Project Expense:
The project reported the accumulated expense of THB: 553,031 out of the sum of first & second disbursement of THB: 611,687.76.

1. Increased capacity and self-confidence of targeted population, especially on community approaches regarding conservation of local biological diversity in relation to adaptation to climatic variance witnessed by ability to articulate the issue and ability to formulate long-term plan
2. Propagation of 144 plants, 3,150 trees ( fruit trees, vegetable, wooded-tree, and aromatic) classified as 50 species and 81 varieties, among 92 project members, at an average of 20 species/family
3. Witnessed increased food security among 101 participating families in 7 tambols
4. Compiled knowledge and experience of project disseminated through mass media
5. Emergence of learning centre for other organizations, such as JICA, students from Naresuan University, 360 degree Television Programme Team, Songkhla Lagoon Network, Land Management Network of Uttaradti Province and the Department of Environment Quality Promotion

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
The project planned to
1. continue the propagation of plant species/varieties in project location focusing on conservation and checking against extinction.
2. initiate and develop pattern of community adaptation to natural disaster, such as drought and flood.
3. initiate and develop a disaster relief fund in Tambol Chomthong, and community-help-community network.
4. develop seed centre as a focal point for adaptation network in the lower northern region.
5. upgrade experience/knowledge gained from project activities to adaptation to climate change.

Experience , Lessons Learnt , Problems and Issues:
Throughout project duration, experience & lessons learnt may be summarized as follows:
1. Established community youth groups caring for native recipes and species, in conjunction with their outreach activities was a success story. Such relevant activities as, several joint TV programmes with the Thai Broadcasting Service were consistent with youth capacity ? not too complicate for community youths to manage.
2.Targeted communities and other stakeholders managed to establish the Natural Disaster Relief Fund by setting aside some amount from the government?s flood relief fund and topping up by THB:10/month/family. The fund would also be used for propagation of native plant species.
3. Project activities on conserving genetic resources was actually one approach for adaptation for climate change. Experiences of project were made visible in the Reform Assembly ( provincial level), Climate Action Network Southeast Asia, and other mass media.
