9th SGP Projects Meeting
9th SGP Projects Meeting
Annual SGP Projects meeting will be held in Gokova, hosted by SAD. The meeting will bring together grantees from ongoing and completed projects, NSC members and a select group of experts and is aimed at improving the communication and collaboration between projects and capacity building in both BD and CC focal areas. The meeting also includes a field visit to the nearby SGP supported projects. In Gokova there is an SGP supported project that aimed to tackle the emerging catastrophy of algea loss in the east Mediterranean seabed via demonstration by creating a "NO TAKE ZONE". Also while doing this, the project also improved the awareness of both the local people, particularly fishermen and authorities, as well as the broader public to take action and conserve the seabed. The grantee succeded in establishing a legal foundation for the said study. The project also led the way to a full size GEF project in the same area, that has a much more broader scope of marine protected areas. The main theme of the meeting of 2010 is on the impact of climate change on coastal areas, fisheries management, and how it impacts on the conservation of areas of importance, both at the coast and in land. Moreover, the meeting aims to elaborate the impact of CC on seawater, seabed and marine environment in general, a largely disregarded issue in Turkey.
