The Development of Barns for the production of biogas and Environmental protection

The project aimed at providing houses in Baharia Oasis, which lays around 500 Kms. from Cairo, with a clean environmental source of energy. By the end of the project, the NGO succeeded in establishing 5 biogas units (providing 10 rural houses), using inexpensive materials readily available in the local community such as metal pipes and mud bricks. In biogas units organic and agricultural wastes are collected and stored in specially designed isolated underground units. During the process of fermentation, biogases are then released. Those gases are used for cooking within homes. Also those units produce high-value organic fertilizers.
The main objectives of the project were as follows:
?To reduce emissionsfromtheburning ofagriculturalwastetoreduceglobalwarmingand addressclimatechange issues, as well as the production ofnewandrenewablesourceof energy andorganic fertilizers.
?To provide and encourage clean and energy production used in cooking
?To disseminate biogas technology in rural areas while maximizing the use of human, animal, and agricultural wastes
?To enhance the efforts made by women, as well as, to improve the general health of families, especially of children.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

- Conducting awareness raising workshops for farmers on climate change problem, nationally and globally. - Continuous training courses for beneficiaries of biogas units on using the system, maintenance and operation. Throughout the project, 8 awareness raising workshops were organized to encourage the use of this simple technology. These workshops illustrated the economic, social and environmental benefits that communities using biogas experience. 5 training courses, in addition to several field visits were conducted on introducing this useful, clean and sustainable waste animal & agricultural waste management. Also, highlighting the importance of using organic fertilizers and their positive impact on their crops.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

- Create sustainable job opportunities for youth to share in solving unemployment problems. - Encourage youth to have an active role in improving their environmental, social, economic and health conditions

Policy Impact

- Due to the positive role played by the NGO to influence environmental policies at the local, full coordination with the city council and the governor to allocate an area (20000 m ²) to establish a factory for recycling garbage in Bahariya Oasis. Especially that the NGO experience has increased and the availability of their equipments is the most important results achieved by the project.

Replication of project activities

- Exchanging knowledge and experiences with other active NGOs in the area through seminars and conferences organized, in which fruitful and innovative ideas are fully discussed. - The NGO succeeded to transfer the project?s model to be implemented by the Future Youth Association and also the local unit of the village. It was also transferred to El Qasr and El Qabala villages. - A partnership was established between the NGO and other active NGOs to serve 20 local groups representing 20 rural households of between 80-100 members.

Notable Community Participation

- The NGO succeeded in convincing the local community of the importance of sorting wastes at the source, where three boxes are placed in every main street in the city for the reception of different kinds of organic waste, plastics, metal cans, paper, cardboard, glass and other.

Capacity - Building Component

SGP seeks to build the capacity of the NGO and provides adequate institutional support to NGOs, which enable them to fulfill their role in serving their local communities and successfully implement projects activities.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The beneficiaries contribute financially and in kind ( co-finance)with SGP, through a revolving- fund system which ensures the sustainability of the project and increase the number of the beneficiries as well.

Gender Focus

The project supports the ability of women in communities to effectively participate in the implementation projects activities. This requires continuous meetings and training sessions targeting men and women to remove any misunderstanding occurring about income generation opportunities for women verses men.

Decrease the consumption of chemical fertilizers that pollute the environment and reduce the costs of agricultural production
- Prevent direct burning of agricultural wastes and decreasing the consumption of irrigation water, which results in improving the environment conditions and lessens air pollution
- Maximizing the use of natural resources
- The production of cheap, clean and sustainable energy
- Introducing new crops which were not presented before such as medicinal plants.
- Maximizing the use of palm products such as almonds, dates and nuts, which contributes to the increase in marketing locally and abroad.
