Towards the Susatinable Monitoring and Management of Coral Reefs in St. Kitts & Nevis
This project will establish a permanent monitoring system for selected coral reefs in St. Kitts which will assist in the designation of marine protected areas. The goal of the project is ?enhanced databases, capacity and awareness for the sustainable monitoring and management of select coral reefs in Saint Kitts and Nevis?. The specific objectives are to:
i. ?establish and enhance by the end of the fourth month of the project, quantitative and
qualitative databases for seven vulnerable coral reefs to inform monitoring and
management;
ii. establish by the end of the project a fully functioning Youth Arm of the St. Christopher
National Trust, two members of which will be trained in reef monitoring methodology; and
iii. build by the end of the project greater awareness among the population including young
person on marine resource conservation with particular emphasis on coral reefs, the life
they sustain and their importance to the environmental, economic and social sustainable
development of Saint Kitts and Nevis?.
Project activities will include: (i) Reef investigation and monitoring on seven vulnerable coral reefs through the establishment of 15 monitoring stations; (ii) Training and Capacity Building of Young People; and (iii) Public Education, Awareness and Outreach.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
At least two young people (boy and girl) will be trained in coral reef monitoring and they will in turn train other members of the St. Christopher National Trust.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
It is anticipated that the trained young people will be able to use their skills for gainfull employment in the future.
