Demonstrate rehabilitation of mountain and forest ecosystems through plantation of Pistachio trees in the area of 12 ha land on arid-zone
The project targeted area, Jamoat Sarmantoi of Pyanj district, located at some 250 km distances away from Dushanbe. The number of population in Jamoat equals to 18,423 persons. The population is mainly engaged with agriculture production and animal husbandry. Majority crops grow in the targeted area are wheat, barley, corn, potato, vegetable and fruits. The living condition of the rural population is very low. It is obvious that within nature, all things are interconnected and mutually-linked with each other. Destroy of such link within a single level entails degradation of whole chain link. The local population experiences lack of employment at local level that forced them to migrate to other countries for better economic opportunities. Existing opportunities are not much secured and local employees pay very little salary, which is insufficient to cover basic needs of a family. Women and children are mainly fieldworkers and they largely depend on agriculture production and animal husbandry.
For the last 10-15 years, due to the lack of electricity supply in rural areas in winter periods, local population were to excessively cut existing trees and bushes on hilly and mountain slopes for heating and cooking needs. This resulted in fast balding of mountain and hill areas and increase risks of occurrences of natural disasters in targeted areas. In present, almost all mountain forests, in particularly pistachio and almond plantations, badly deteriorated or vanished at all. Production yields of existing pistachios and almonds plantations reduced twice that made the living conditions of rural population worse. Due to the excessive cutoff and fast balding of mountain slopes the sustainable biocoenosis and ecological balance of mountain landscapes are badly deteriorated.
The project is envisaged establishment of pistachio plantation in 12 ha land located in Ainalmadjar village. Upon completion of the project, above rural population provided with employment, will have renewed access to natural resources and alternative means for livelihood, as well as will contribute to revival of local economy and improvement of living conditions of rural population.
