Green Wave 2010
Green Wave 2010
The Objective of this project is to promote awareness of the need to conserve biodiversity. This will be done by planting trees to celebrate World Biodiversity Day on May 21st /22nd 2010 with leaders, business communities, youths and children from various schools throughout Southern Belize, so that they are aware that they can make a difference in protecting our global environment.

Last year, 2009, to implement the Green Wave, SHIB had a teacher?s training workshop, contributed over 4,000 seedlings to schools and in conjunction with GEF SGP conducted a poster completion. This year, 2010, SHIB wants to reach more people and students to make their awareness campaign bigger. To do this SHIB will team up with SEA to broaden our outreach. By teaming up with SEA, SHIB will be able to cover more schools in more communities. Instead of giving out trees and having a poster competition, SHIB thinks it is best to promote Green Wave 2010 by having an exchange of t-shirt or cap for an electronic picture. By doing this we will have more winners and our outreach and advertizing will be more broad based and more people will be made aware of Green Wave 2010. The problems that this project intends to address are the cutting down of trees which are still being felled in our forest by illegal logging as well as slash and burn farming which continues to this day. By participating in this project SHIB and SEA along with GEF SGP plan to educate and make the public aware of the benefits of having trees. SHIB, SEA and GEF SGP go one step further by having people planting trees not only to commemorate biodiversity day but because it is good for our planet.

By the completion of this project, 4,000 trees will have been planted in 32 communities in one month leading up to May 22nd 2010 throughout Southern Belize and the communities should have a good knowledge of saving our trees and forest.

Risks to Successful Implementation

Time of Day and the year for Planting ? the 10 o?clock hour and the 21st /22nd May 2010 in the dry season throughout the country of Belize. To plant at this time and this part of the year might be seen to some as ridiculous and stupid. It is therefore necessary for SHIB to continue to monitor the trees for a suitable time to ensure that the trees are taken care of. SHI extensionists will monitor the growth and health of the trees planted for up to six months after completion of the project.
