The Empowernment of Sugar Palm Farmer To Improve Community Welfare and Bukit Semahung Forest Conservation
GOAL
The betterment of social and economic conditions of society with a sustainable forest.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : To increase public awareness and motivation to preserve forest.
Indicators : 1. 80% of sugar palm farmers are actively involved in every activity.
2. 30% of women are actively involved in every activity
3. Result of market survey for palm products is attached to the report
Activities : 1) Community meeting
Exploring, identifying thoughts and hopes of the people for village development in managing their forest.
2) Market Survey for Sugar Palm Products
Looking at the level of market demand for palm trees products.
3) Workshop of Village Planning
Aiming to map the potential of natural resources available in public area, building consensus to preserve forests that still exist and making a joint plan.
Objective 2 : To increase community knowledge and skills in managing forest products and family economic.
Indicators : 1. Documentation of activities.
2. 70% of training participants can understand and apply the training materials by making products that are taught during training
3. 30% of women were actively involved in every activity.
4. NTFP/non timber forest product potential mapping, the mapping of society's internal problems, market analysis and the planning of family economic.
5. Minimal 30 households develop new economic activities
Activities : 1) Training of management of sugar palm product and other forest products
The objective is to increase and improve communities' knowledge and skills of to utilize and manage forest products in an optimal and sustainable manner.
2) Training of Integrated Economic Development
The objective is to improve knowledge and skills of community in order to develop economy based on natural resources while maintaining the sustainability of Samahung Hill.
3) Training of Making Organic Fertilizer (Compost)
The objective is to increase public knowledge about fertilizer made from raw materials around where they live that are available, cheap and environmentally friendly.
Objective 3 : To replant forest trees and fruits in a participatory manner.
Indicators : 1. Documentation of activities, such as photographs, attendance lists, minutes of meetings, and reports.
2. 30% of women are actively involved in every activity.
3. ± 5.000 forest trees are planted.
Activities : 1) Identification and provision of forest tree's seeds and fruits that have economic value and starting to become scarce
2) Nursery and seedlings
3) Carrying out replanting of forest tree and fruit
4) Care and maintenance
Objective 4 : To increase the income of the people through the development of productive business.
Indicators : 1. Documentation of activities, such as photographs, attendance lists, minutes of meetings, and reports.
2. 30% of women are actively involved in every activity.
3. Report on identification of organizing productive business of community.
4. Four processing units and product storage is built in 2 villages.
5. Revolving fund/venture capital for a group that consists of minimal 7 people in every assisted village to develop sugar palm or matting.
6. Documentation on facilitation process and the development of community work that is being reported on activity progress report.
Activities : 1) Identifying and organizing community productive business
The objective is to identify sustainable and forest-friendly community productive businesses so that it can be managed in a good and sustainable manner.
2) Facilitating the capital of community productive business
This activity is the result of a follow-up from organized business community, the capital is only given to productive business of community in groups.
3) Mentoring of productive business of sugar palm management and other forest products of community groups after the project
The objective is to assist the community in order to run the business well and in accordance with the expected objectives.
Objective 5 : Encouraging Perdes (Village Regulations) on Utilizing NTFP and Conservation Area of Samahung Hill
Indicators : 1) Monitoring on people participation to see the increasing awareness of the neighboring village community to protect forest and to use non timber forest products in wise and sustainable manner
2) Village policy (Perdes) that can control the preservation of Samahung Hill from destruction
3) 30% of women are actively involved in every activity.
4) Documentation of activities, such as photographs, attendance list, minutes of meetings and reports.
5) Publication in form of stickers, leaflets about Perdes, and community's overall activities
Activities : 1) Nungkat Bumi Workshop
The objective is to strengthen the agreement of Samahung Hill area management and to add regulations on NTFP management in sustainable manner.
2) Participatory Perdes Formulation
Perdes formulation is conducted in three meetings with community leaders in two villages (Head of Villages, tumenggung (respective local leaders), youth and women)
3) Lobbying meetings with BPD (village representative board), community leaders This activity aims to smooth the creation of Perdes being drafted, 3 meetings with BPD were conducted.
4) Perdes dissemination
To facilitate Perdes dissemination to society, stickers and copies of Perdes will be spread.

Direct : 102 head of households who are directly involved from Angkabakng, Padang, and Pate Hamlets
Indirect : 218 head of households from the respective hamlets
