The Rehabilitation of Palmyra Palms as Endemic Species of East Nusa Tenggara to Support Household Food Security and Economy Welfare
GOAL
Restoring lontar (papyrus) as one of the typical plant in the territory of East Nusa Tenggara to be used as supporting plant to improve physical environment, farming diversity, family economic improvement, and family food security especially during long drought.

OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : To explore the problems and potential of papyrus in several villages in Semau island
Activities : 1. Activities preparation:
a. Collecting secondary data from relevant institutions;
b. Assessing secondary data and literature sources;
c. Identifying the need of additional data and data sources;
2. Carrying out analysis of land suitability, land capability and land qualities;
Objective 2 : To explore community relations in several sub-villages in Uiboa village with papyrus plants
Activities : 1. Conducting field surveys and analysis of interests of group referring to the analysis of land suitability report;
2. Carrying out strengthening activities by conducting small workshops.
Objective 3 : To cultivate papyrus plant in the location of family field, groups? field and husbandry.
Activities : 1. Developing papyrus plantation and garden of crops, vegetables and feed groups;
2. Developing husbandry to support papyrus plantation and field of crops groups;
Objective 4 : To formulate papyrus management plan with crop, vegetable and husbandry with part of papyrus plant as source of organic fertilizer (liquid and solid), pesticides, animal feed and cover plants.
Activities : 1. Making liquid organic fertilizer and pesticides from papyrus leaves.
2. Applying liquid organic fertilizer and liquid pesticides on vegetables, crops and feed
3. Utilizing papyrus fruit as source of feed
4. Utilizing papyrus tree as roof for nurseries and garden houses.
Objective 5 : To introduce the management of papyrus tree as source of nira (sap obtained from palm to produce sugar), palm sugar, syrup, nata de coco, and one of households' energy sources.
Activities : 1. Developing products that utilize papyrus, such as nata de coco, sugar syrup, palm sugar,
2. Developing stoves based on alcohol that is made from papyrus and cassava. The stove is made from hay and branches of energy efficient tree.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
1. The presence of palm nurseries, where the number of the saplings grows in the nursery reach 80% of the total seed planted.
2. The development of goat/sheep farm that is able to support the utilization of papyrus.
3. The utilization of organic fertilizers and organic pesticides made of papyrus leaves and other local materials to increase the yield of cultivated crops such as vegetables and food crops (corn, beans).
4. The application of liquid or solid organic fertilizer, made of papyrus that could improve the chemical properties of soil.
5. Fields of multipurpose plants that could serve as crop, organic materials, and source of energy needed by the families.
6. The development of community small business, such as the practice of making palm sugar, nata de coco on a small scale, and the development of marketing.
7. Group of farmers began to have a saving group that can revolve to members of the group in farm business by the second year.
8. Member of farmer groups in the next 2-3 years are expected to be willing to cultivate papyrus as part of their fieldwork.
9. At least 2-3 people outside the group are expected to be willing to participate in practicing what was being done in groups in their own respective field.
10. The presence of interest in forming a new group or the other villages that wants to get involved in the ongoing activities.

Direct : ? 2 farmer groups: Karya Nyata and Yani Gemilang. Each group consists of 15 people (4-5 women and 10-11 men).
Indirect : ? 1,079 residents of Uiboa village.
