Promotion of Sustainable Land Use and Protection of Bio-Diversity in Semi Arid Ravines Region through Community Action
Promotion of Sustainable Land Use and Protection of Bio-Diversity in Semi Arid Ravines Region through Community Action
Goal: To address land degradation in a way that achieves long term global environment benefits within context of sustainable development.

. Objective:
Mitigate the causes and negative impacts of land degradation on the structure and functional integrity of ecosystems through sustainable land management practices as a contribution to improving people?s livelihood and economic well being.Project Strategy:
? Formation of 2 clusters among 10 villages.
? Establishment of one federation through SHGs in each cluster to undertake action for implementation.
? Livelihood and bio-diversity conservation actions to be undertaken through SHGs and SHG members.
? Capacity building of local community workers in range of actions at SHG/Village level.
? Village work place to be finalized through PRA technique.
Project Sustainability:

? This project will be implemented with active participation of community and SHgs. Village committee will be formed from the beneficiaries. Community will also learn the benefits of problems they are facing.

? Capacity will be developed for bio diversity conservation and livelihood enhancement of community and its organization. SHGs will also be developed. Saving of these SHGs will be used for sustainability of the project.

? Community will be part of all planning and implementation of the project. After completion of the project, the villagers will take over the responsibility of structures and village committee. SSD would also support the village committee for the future support. VDO and SHGs will actively involve after project period is over.
Global Environment Impact:
? Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi arid and sub humid areas. Primarily human activities and climate variations cause it. Desertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. It occurs because dry land ecosystems, which cover over one third of the world land area, are extremely vulnerable to over exploitation and inappropriate land use. Poverty, political instability, deforestation, overgrazing and bed irrigation practices can all undermine the land?s productivity.

? Combating desertification is essential to ensuring the long-term productivity of inhabited dry lands. Unfortunately, past efforts have too often failed, and around the world the problem of land degradation continues to worsen. Recognizing the need for a fresh approach, 179 Governments have joined as of March 2002, the United Nations convention to combat desertification. The treaty acknowledges the struggle to protect dry land will be a long one. There will be no quick fix. This is because of desertification are many and complex, ranging from international trade patterns to unsustainable land management practices. Real and difficult changes will have to be made both at the international and the local levels.

? Desertification can only be reversed profound changes in local and international behavior. It should also focus on awareness-raising, education, and training, both in developing and developed countries. Step by step, these changes will ultimately lead to sustainable land use and food security for a growing world population. Combating desertification, then, is really just part of a much broader objective: The Sustainable Development of countries affected by drought and desertification.

? Ravines area in project villages is suffering from all problems related to land productivity. Villagers are in extreme poverty. This project shows the idea of capacity building support to the farm based poor community for combating desertification and livelihood improvement through sustainable land management practices
