The Development of Natural Orchid Ecotourism to Strengthen Community Organization in Sentarum Lake, West Kalimantan
EEcological Threat :
Lake Sentarum National Park, West Area and the area surrounded are facing serious ecological threats that mostly come from : large scale palm oil plantation, illegal logging and natural resource over exploitation. The involvement of local community is a success key in conservation program since most of community live Lake Sentarum National Park from hundred of years and have been managing their customary forest ever since. Thus, Yayasan Riak Bumi is providing community training related to natural orchid identification, and habitat needed for the natural orchid to grow. Based on the first stage of community training in 5 kampongs (Pelaik, Pengerak, Leboyan, Semangit, and Selimbau), community lived in Pelaik and Selimbau has immediately formulated local rule to protect forest in several rivers since it has become habitat for wild natural orchid. Community created signboard in each of the tree to inform which area is protected and which will be developed into natural orchid ecotourism site.

Developed conservation model that integrate community empowernment and natural orchird ecotourism.
Project Development Objective:
1. Identified and existed potential map of natural orchid in Lake Sentarum National Park area and surrounded;
2. Improved community awarness and sense belonging of their natural assests;
3. Strengthened organization and individual capacity in managing conservation area;
4. Established multi-party cooperation in developing natural orchid-based ecotourism in Lake Sentarum National Park area and surrounded.
Expected Outputs:
1. Existed documentation and natural orchid potential map in Lake Sentarum Natural Park area (132.000 ha) and buffer zone (65.000 ha)
2. Improved organization and individual capacity in promoting natural orchid ecotourism-based conservation activities;
3. Established multiparty cooperation in the development of Lake Sentarum National Park.
Activities to be Conducted:
1. Conducting training in cultivating, nursing and conserving natural orchid Lake Sentarum Tourism Group in five targeted kamongs;
2. Conducting series of trainings for tourism group of lake sentarum regarding ecotourism potentials; introduction and mapping of other ecotourism potentials by Lake Sentarum Tourism Group using soar (strength, opportunity, articulation, and result) method;
3. Conducting identification of Lake Sentarum Tourism Group capacity using soar method;
4. Conducting trainings :
A. Leadership
B. Organization management
C. Negotiation skills
D. Other training based on assessment result
5. Conducting field training for Lake Sentarum Tourism Group and community to improve knowledge and skill necessary in ecotourism management (e.g: tour guide, budget accomodation, etc)
6. Conducting other trainings based on the assessment result.
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries:
1. Direct : 20-30 community members from Kampong Selimbau, Leboyan, Semangit (Melayu Tribes), Pengerak and Pelaik (Dayak Iban Tribes)
2. Indirect : Community live in Lake Sentarum National Park area
