Improving Environmental Health Standards by employing Environmental Conservation practices To Reduce And Eliminate Pops Through Youth Participation in solid waste management
1.0 Problem
The majority of the people living in Epworth live below the poverty datum line. The situation is aggravated by the poor service delivery from the local town board resulting in waste being illegally dumped all over the shore. The pollution from the waste is compounded by chemical pollution from the various chemicals used in the industries and farms surrounding Epworth.
The illegal solid waste dumps are ultimately burnt and in so doing release a lot of Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like dioxins and furans which end up affecting the health of the local population and the world at large. Proper waste management is thus imperative in the reduction of POPs being released into the environment.Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a group of extremely toxic chemicals that are products of human activity. POPs includes a large number of pesticides, industrial chemicals and unintentionally produced by-products. In the proposed area of project implementation, POPs are a result of waste and chemical management methods.

Activities relating to objective 1
1.1 setting up a community based information centre for POPs, a Public Library and Internet café

3.3.2 Recovery of recoverables
3.3.3 Recycling of recyclables
3.3.4 Local authority collects final waste for the landfill
3.4 Promote the use of organic manure from the composting programme

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Impact
Awareness raising at local level wil help influence policy formulation by the relevant stakeholders.
Notable Community Participation
Currently the community does not have a culture of taking care of its environment as this has been a function left to the local authority whilst the sole source of livelihoods for the communities has been direct exploitation of primary natural resources. To ensure active participation a buy-in process will make the community to own the project. The buy-in process will offer the communities alternative engagements to the usual destructive ones.
