Rural Biogas Digesters Building Project in Mt. Wuyi Nature Reserve
Targeted Location and Population:
Mount Wuyi National Nature Reserve in Fujian Province covers the largest and best preserved subtropical forest ecosystem in southeast China. It is the world's biosphere reserve and the world's cultural and natural heritage site and has been identified as one of the prioritized biodiversity conservation hotspots in China Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan. The project site is located in the heart of Mount Wuyi National Nature Reserve.
There are currently 1,374 people with a total of 150 households in target location. people there live on agriculture with average income of 2,786 RMB.
Problems:
The local villagers are used to searching firewood on the mountains for boiling water, cooking and their daily life need, which causes a serious threat to the ecological environment of nature reserve as well as biological diversity. Apart from planting rice, tobacco and other crops, organic substances including a great deal of straw, weeds, human and animal feces, garbage and sludge from livestock provide pre-conditions to build biogas digester.
Solutions/ planned activities:
1. conduct training workshops on climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation for local villagers.
2. Construct trinity biogas digesters (piggeries-toilets-kitchens) for local villagers.
3. Organize technical training on safe utilization and management of biogas digesters for local villagers.
4. Establish biogas digesters service station to help villagers on biogas digester maintainance and utilization.
Anticipated results/ immediate outputs of this project:
1. about 1,300 villagers awareness on renewable energy is raised.
2. about 80 biogas digesters are constructed for local villagers, which can reduce 500 tons firewood utilization per year and can protect 350.000 sq m woodlands with a reduction of 675 tons soil erosion and 650 tons carbon dioxide emissions.
3. about 1000 persons know the techniques for safe utilization and management of biogas digesters.
4. A biogas digesters service station with a new storage tank for fermentation of raw materials and a set of material access equipment, testing equipment and maintenance tools is established, which provides technical support to the local villagers.
