Sustainable Development Project in Yingxi Village, Yanchi County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
Targeted Location and Population:
The project site is located in the eastern part of Ningxia, southern edge of Mu Us Desert and at the junction zone of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and inner Mongolia. It is a typical semi-arid area of semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral areas and local farmers? dry-land farming can only rely on the weather. Sheep raising is the main income of the locals.
Problems:
The main problems in the project sites are drought, water shortages, lack of resources, a serious resources waste and extreme desertification of grassland resources. The backward lifestyle and farming production have finally increased the waste of resources and carbon emission.
Solutions/ planned activities:
1. Promote rural environment-friendly facilities including energy-saving stoves, energy-saving heatable brick beds, solar heating houses and stoves and "trinity" biogas facilities?Including biogas digester, pigsty and toilet?to help farmers to establish various household ecological model.
2. Implement alternative livelihood activities such as building sheep stall and microbial storage feed tank, artificially planting grass and planting economic forest with the purpose to reduce human destroy behavior on the grass.
3.Plant farmland shelter belts to reduce wind and sand damage to agricultural production and to increase the rate of forest coverage and farmers' income.
4.Support women and family industry development through providing local women with micro-credit finance to promote farmers? income.
5. Establish New Energy Facility Maintenance Group in the project area.
6. Raise farmers? environmental awareness, especially on renewable energy using and climate change thorugh training and workshop.
Anticipated results/ immediate outputs of this project:
1.about 200 Mu grass are planted, 10 sheep stalls and 10 microbial storage feed tanks are built;30% amount of sheep grazing is reduced.
2. about 50 energy-saving heatable brick beds, 30 energy-saving stoves, 30 trinity biogas systems, 60 solar cookers and 5 solar heating houses are built, which will reduce 1183 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
3. about 150 mu of farmland shelterbelts and 80 mu of economic forests are planted, the wind-damage farmland is reduced.
4.about 50 rural women participate in micro-credit finance, which enables them to grasp the economic rights, participate in learning business technology and literacy sweeping and change the backwardness.
5. about 2000 farmers has the knowledge of climate change mitigation, renewable energy and grassland degradation prevention.
6. A community self-development group and new energy equipment maintenance group is established with financial support from local government.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
50 rural women participate in micro-credit finance, which enables them to grasp the economic rights, participate in learning business technology.
Community self-development group and new energy equipment maintenance group is established with funding support from local government for the community to self-manage village resources, to maintain new energy facilities and to ensure the project's long-term mechanism.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Increasing income of poor households is one of the goals of this project.
