Participatory Avian Conservation and Public Awareness Project in Nanwan Community, Beihai City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Targeted Location and Population:

The project will target Nanwan Community and the adjacent Guantou Ridge National Forest Park and also four nearby villages: Shishe Village, Liuxia Village, Dadun Hai Village and Shawan Village.

The target groups include 250 households with 720 persons.The main income of local residents comes from fishing, primary processing of aquatic products, sand-selling and being migrant workers. Annual average income/person is RMB 4,000.

Problems:

The locals are lack of knowledge of how human activities impact wild flora and fauna, especially birds. So that Hunting and killing of birds occurs quite often and the local residents seem indifferent to the killing of birds. There is no effective action to protect birds in this area.

Solutions/ planned activities:
1. Raise public awareness, reduce fowling and birds killing activities in project area through setting up warning boards, patrolling and media outreach;
2.Conduct environment education in primary schools to reduce the activities of disturbing and killing birds by children due to their curiosity; educate the housewives, restaurants managers to give up cooking and eating wild birds.
3.Promote sustainable protection measures through alternative livelihood such as birds watching and poultry keeping in project area.

Anticipated results/ immediate outputs of this project:
1. about 500 persons have the knowledge of bird protection.
2. about 15 pieces of warning boards, 5 feeding sites and 20 artificial nests are set up; birds entrapping and hunting are obviously decrease.
3. about 80% restaurants and souvenir stores in project area promise that never cook, produce and sell any wild birds stuff.
4. about 200 primary schools students in project area receive environmental education.
5. A NGO -birds watching association is established supported by this project; public awarness is raised through birds watching activities and bird photographing exhibition.
6. about 3 domonstration households receive technical and financial supports to develop alternative livelihood such as ecological breeding.
