Mangrove and wetland ecosystem conservation and integrated management for Ximen Island Marine Special Reserve, Zhejiang province
Mangrove and wetland ecosystem conservation and integrated management for Ximen Island Marine Special Reserve, Zhejiang province
Targeted Location and Population:

Ximen Island is located in Yueqing Bay, the northern margin of subtropics of China?s southeast sea area.Mangroves distribution in Ximen Island Marine Special Reserve is the most north one in China, which is of great and irreplaceable research value. The mangrove is the major protected object in Ximen Island Special Marine Reserve, and the mangroves in the reserve are a significant indicator for mangrove introduction and forestation in high latitude area.

The populations are distributed in 4 villages with 1000 residents. 90% of the residents? total income comes from aquaculture and the annual per capita income is about RMB 2,000.

Problems:
Mudflat aquaculture is the main resource for local residents. The mangrove planting also need tidal flat, it conflictS with tidal flat for aquaculture. How to harmonize mangrove planting/rehabilitation with local residents? income generation, and achieve the perfect combination of ecological, social and economical benefits are the main challenges.

Solutions/ planned activities:
1. Through outreach and training, promote local residents? understanding on the economic and ecological values of mangroves, and attract more people to take part in protecting mangroves.
2. Through publicizing the importance of mangroves wetland ecosystem to biodiversity conservation and addressing climate change to Ximen Island Marine Special Reserve administrative authority, strengthen local government and community?s awareness on mangroves protection and rehabilitation.
3. Explore a model of ecotourism, which can bring job opportunities for local residents, and promote to expand mangrove area by planting.

Anticipated results/ immediate outputs of this project:
1.About 300 people have the knowledge of mangrove and its impact on climate change;
2.A report on mangrove wetland ecosystem protection is submitted to Ximen Island Marine Special Reserve administration;
3.Two ha mangroves are planted, migrant birds ammount is increasing;
4.About 200 people know how to protect the mangrove
5.A model of ecotourism suited local situation is developed
