Encouraging The Practice of Management and Utilization of Unused Land in Talago Limo and Sungai Rambut Village as Buffer Zone of Berbak National Park Through Jelutung Plant
Ecological Threat :

1. The illegal logging activities still exist in the area of Berbak National Park. Low quality of human resource and limited budget of Forestry Departement are considered as the main factor for the lack of monitoring system by Forest Police. This conditon also lead to the limited work opportunity for community lived around the area.
2. Other than illegal logging, the community also took ?Jelutung? latex which high in economic values. Instead of using traditional tapped way of Jelutung latex, the community use chemical material that could result in the death of tree. Morover, the difficulties facing by Berbak National Park management is the existence of conflict regarding territorial border between Berbak National Park and buffered villages surounding the national park.





Project Development Goal:
Planning program to increase community welfare through the utilization of unused land in buffer village of Berbak National Park which in the long term will decrease the pressure towards Berbak National Park.


Project Development Objective:

1. Improved community welfare through the establishment of demonstration plot of Jelutung plant which will be used as Jelutung cultivation center to meet the needs of Jelutung seeds.
2. Decreased Jelutung tapped activities by community in Berbak National Park.

Expected Outputs:

1. Existed participative map and landused coverage data in Telago Limo Village and Sungai Rambut village as buffer zone of Berbak National Park.
2. Established farmer group as community organization to conduct program planning, management, and utilization of landused in pilot village;
3. Existed sustainable support and network from local government in supporting village development program around Berbak National Park.

Activities to be Conducted:
1. Mapping of Land Potentials :
a. Documenting targeted location to develop Jelutung plant;
b. Facilitating community planning and farmers involved in the activities;
2. Organizing farmers group :
a. Facilitating the establishment of farmer groups consisted of board members and regular members;
b. Conducting preparation of seedling location;
c. Facilitating organizational mechanism and rules as well as identifying various training to improve community capacity;
3. Village development program :
a. Conducting promotion and socialization of Jelutung plant program to various stakeholders.
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries:
1. Direct : 5 farmer groups are targeted as direct beneficiaries. 2 farmer groups are located in Talago Limo Village and 3 farmer groups located in Sungai Rambut Village. Each of group consisted of 15 members, and total of direct beneficiaries are 75 people.
2. In-Direct : Community with abandoned land in 2 villages bordering Berbak Natinal Park (55 Households of Sungai Rambut Village; and 12 Households of Talago Limo Village).
