Project Results
I. First Progress Report (July 8,2010:
Undertaken Activities:
1. Building technical and institutional capacity of target population through seminars and study tours
2. Building biogas pits in targeted location
Result of activities:
1. Increased capacity and insight of biogas technology witnessed by community initiative to establish coordinating committee to monitor project activities to ensure smooth implementation and setting up fund for building biogas pits with THB: 90,000 as initial investment
2. 25 biogas pits being built by targeted population according to the design
Project communication:
The project was made more visible through the following events:
1. In March 2010, there was an exhibition through boards and posters of the project in a knowledge festivity ? Cow and Water Buffalo? in Mukdaharn Province
2. Project leaders were invited by the Husbandry District Office to be resources persons for farmers.
3. The biogas design of the project was replicated by Surin Provincial Energy Office.
Experience , lessons Learnt, problem and issue:
1. Study tour, by and large, was necessary to convince targeted population on many types of technology. Prior to project study tours, the population was not so convinced whether water buffalo manure would produce energy. But after, they appeared very convinced and were eager to proceed with the construction.
2. Encouraging a saving activity at the very beginning of the project was proven to be a useful activities. Since January 2010, all participating families began saving , and now had enough savings to contribute to the biogas pit construction.
3. Rain caused some delay in procuring construction material within the villages. To keep up with project schedule, some materials had to be procured from outside-village sources
Project expense:
The project reported the expense of THB: 268,131.00 out of the first disbursement of THB: 269,935.02.
II. Monitoring Visit by NC and NSC (August 13,2010:
Findings & Observations:
The first findings was at one of the nine participating villages, Baan Khoke Takhien with 104 families ? 32 being members of the water buffalo group with majority speaking Khmer dialect ? is a paddy farming village in the dry northeast of Thailand. Witnessed other popular crops were sugar cane and tapioca. Eucalyptus plantation was The village is grid-connected and still depends upon fire-woods for household energy need. A model biogas facility was seen operational supplying gas to kitchen of a project member satisfactorily. Two other facilities in the village were under construction, estimated as 80 % completion. It was reported that all 12 facilities proposed in the village would see their completion within a few months more. Project members decided to delay the construction to avoid technical problems being caused by rain.
The second finding was at another participating village ,Baan None Thong, only a few miles away from Baan Khoke Takhien. There were over 200 families in the village , but with only 30 being members of water buffalo group. In term of livelihoods and energy use, they were the same. One biogas pit was witnessed under construction. There were 8 proposed biogas facilities all of which were referred to as under construction and would see completion within a few months.
Project members in both villages demonstrated increased technical capacity after study tours and training on the biogas. Each one actively showed and told what they learnt about building and maintain biogas pits.
The grantee approach in securing cash co-financing from project members was interesting. In it, the grantee lends the proposed amount, first, to complete construction .One Baht/day minimum had to be saved in a bamboo saving box by borrowing member. Once the saving is enough, the member was required to pay back.
III. Second Progress Report ( February 8,2011:
Undertaken Activities:
1. Keeping on building technical and institutional capacity of target population through seminars and study tours
2. Keeping on building biogas pits in targeted location
3. Conducting participatory evaluation
Result of activities:
1. 50 farmers being interested in the project with 25 applying to participate in the course of activities
2. Additional 40 biogas pits being built in project location and replicated location
3. Confirmed satisfaction of project members on the use of biogas: the primary reduction of canned gas (LPG) being one can ( about 15 kg) within 4 month/family. Accumulated / more precise figures being recorded by project members.
Project communication:
The project was made more visible/understood by
1. Exhibition boards on biogas technology
2. Accepting invitation to be resources persons
3. Inviting interested individual/ organization to visit project location
Experience , lessons Learnt, problem and issue:
There was a technical problem regarding a weak flame from stove . This problem was solved by changing burners to the one with bigger and more gas nozzles.
Project expense:
The project reported the accumulated expense of THB: 475,440.15 out of the sum of first & second disbursement of THB:539,370.04 .
IV. Completion report (Received on 1 February, 2012)):
Date of Participatory Evaluation( 31 January 2012):
Number of Beneficiaries/ Participating personnel:
Women: 220
Men: 228
Children: 113
Number of persons trained/ attending seminars, joining study tours:
Women: 250
Men: 410

Expense:
Amount received from SGP (3 disbursements): THB: 779,650.34
Total amount spent out of SGP budget: THB: 900,000 Balance: THB : (-120,349.66)
Amount authorized for the final payment: US$: 2,690.58
Amount Received from others: THB: 650,000 (in cash)
THB: 3,238,000 (in kind)
Activities undertaken:
1. Building technical and institutional capacity of target population
2. Demonstration of uses of biogas
3. Participatory Evaluation
4. Knowledge Management and outreach
Results and indicators:
1. Increased capacity of 210 target population witnessed by active participating in monthly meeting and ability to put what are learnt into practical use
2. Completed and functioning 187 biogas pits as learning places
3. Reduction of fuel consumption in farming practice by 1.2 litres/acre/season
4. Reduction of canned gas consumption at least 1 can/family/month among 187 participating families ? equivalent to 1 can/family/month X 187 families X 12 months X 26 litres/can X 1.5 kg.CO2 emitted = 87.5 tons of CO2 avoided per year
5. About 80 % of participating families expressing satisfaction with results of the project
6. Active participation of major stakeholders to replicate project approaches in other areas.
Project Communication:
As mentioned in the previous reports
Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
The project would keep on the activities by
1. establishing network and committee within targeted location under general oversight of the grantee and relevant government office (husbandry units)
2. coordinating with network committee in promotion activities with relevant government office
3. encouraging community saving as a strategy to expand biogas use for new members
Experience , Lessons Learnt , Problems and Issues:
The project referred to the following as problems and issues:
1. Targeted population , at first , were not convinced about biogas technology. The issue was addressed by launching capacity building through study tour.
2. In cash contribution from communities was not substantial. The issue was addressed by the strategy ? Saving one Baht/day in small bamboo tube?.
3. Construction materials was not always available resulting in project delay. This one was addressed by procurement from other location and rushing a portion of construction to avoid rainy season.
4. At the very beginning of biogas use, the heat from the flame was not sufficient. This was addressed by changing gas nozzle to a bigger size and with more numbers of holes.
