New methods for rainwater collection and construction of drinking water holes in the Karaburuni peninsula
The main problem of shepherds in dry summer months in this area is the lack of water and the stress that the animals incur due to the long distance needed to be covered to reach drinking water. Due to these constraints flocks of animals reside and pasture near these drinking points exerting a very high grazing pressure on the habitat. So far drinking water holes (?Lera? in Albanian) were constructed with concrete that was not reinforced with steel and for a series of reasons have cracked and loose water. The cost of construction materials and transportation cost due to their remoteness put the price of new structures in the area of 10 ? 15 thousand dollars. This project will experiment the lining of old and new basins with special plastic liners that come at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
