Rehabilitation of Rau KDC Irrigation Canal, Rau, Moshi
CONTEXT:

RAU KDC irrigation canal which has its source at Rau river is used by Mbokomu and Msaranga communities for irrigation and domestic purposes. The irrigation canal faces a number of problems including overflow, breaking of the canal walls and blockage of the canal due to lack of division boxes and soil erosion. The canal leaking has resulted into reduced amount of water in the canal before reaching the farmers which increase water shortage and increase environmental destruction.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE;

The project objective is to conserve the environment of Rau river and to rehabilitate the irrigation canal and conserve water source.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES;

1.1. To conserve water source at Rau River and to plant 2000 trees along Rau river.
1.2. To improve and increase production of coffee and tree seedlings
1.3. To plant 5000 trees along the irrigation canal and at community areas.
1.4. To construct 10 division boxes and intake main gate.
1.5. To rehabilitate by lining 1550 meter of the RAU KDC

Project Characteristics and Results
Replication of project activities
Formation and strengthening of water users association has been replicated by other water catchments which provides support in irrigation activities. Other community have replicated the use of contour to retain moisture and nutrients in the farms.
Gender Focus
The irrigation canal provided water for both irrigation and domestic use. This has reduced load to women who fetch water from far for domestic purpose. Irrigation has increase availability of vegetables to families which were not able to afford purchasing of vegetables from market.
