PROJECT FOR CONSERVATION OF A SMALL AND UNIQUE POPULATION OF HIGHLY VULNERABLE AFRICAN WILDDOG (LYCAON PICTUS) THROUGH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN NORTH SOFALA PROVINCE (MARROMEU COMPLEX INCL. INHAMITANGA FOREST RESERVE)
a project that aims to promote conservation of a unique population of the Africa wilddog (Lycaon pictus) in the Gorongosa-Marromeu Complex, an area regarded as a biodiversity hotspot within the country, and within the southern limit of the Rift Valley; only 5 thousand specimen live in the wild, and this specie is endangered in Sub-Saharian Africa, being listed in IUCN Red-data-book; this areas genetic pool has less than 50 specimen; the project will promote conservation of this specie by limiting local communities pressure on it, and diversifying local subsistence activities that will enable increase of household income.
