Youth 4 nature - youngsters against climate change

The project aims to demonstrate that local initiatives that promote sustainable transport and energy efficiency work very well and the results of such activities can be integrated in the community?s everyday life. Specifically, the project will establish partnerships between the civil society, schools and the local government and in this framework undertake waste collection activities on the Olt river and the mineral water springs in Ciucului de Jos basin, disseminate informative materials on climate change issues and promote sustainable energy and transport within a mountain bike contest.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

30 locals are involved in training activities, 300 persons participate in the practical activities (cleaning the banks of Olt river and its tributaries from municipal waste, in the project implementation area), 10,000 persons participate in the information activities.

Replication of project activities

The NGO considers that the project activities can be replicated in any region of the country, especially the cleaning and ecologization activities and the mounting of a solar panel for the promotion of alternative energy resources.

Notable Community Participation

The communities from Sâncraieni, Sânmartin, Cozmeni, Tusnad and Baile Tusnad, three NGOs and one local public administration participate and co-finance the project.

Project sustainability

The continuity of the project is sustained thorough the awareness raising of the population on energy efficiency and conservation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on the climate change issue, use of renewable energy sources and sustainable transport.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities (information materials, training sessions, practical activities) contribute to the capacity building of the local population related to climate change and the possibilities to reduce its effects through increasing the energy efficiency, using renewable energy sources and promoting the non-motorised transport.

Policy Influence

The project has influenced the relationships between public authorities and NGOs, as local decision makers have realized that local development can be achieved only through sustained cooperation between the private sector and NGOs. Thus we can say that the project has influenced local policies regarding development and regional cooperation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will contribute to the sustainable livelihood for the population by informing and demonstrating the advantages of increasing the dwellings? energy efficiency, using renewable energy sources and non-motorized transport.

Project Results

- Dissemination: press release; 8 websites; 5000 leaflets printed regarding energy efficiency, renewable energy resources, climate change;
- Organizing the 3d edition of the dog harness competition (300 posters, 14 websites) and a mountain bike marathon "Ride 4 nature" (5 banners, 500 posters, 300 personalized T-shirts, 276 competitors, 600 spectators), as promoting non-motorized transport
- On Earth day it has been organized a cleaning and ecologization of the valley of Olt river on 40 km length
- An ecological camp has been organized for 80 students from "Jokai Mor" General School and Praid Commune - 1500 students and 10 professors involved in ecological education activities
- Two training sessions on climate change mitigation possibilities, capacity development for community participation in environmental policy making, awareness raising activities for public-private partnership in pilot projects (mounting of a solar panel to the City Hall of Baile Tusnad) - 41 persons trained
