Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

An in-depth consultation has already taken place, with discussions beginning in 2002 with communities and stakeholder representatives. This proposal has evolved as a direct result of that consultations process and pre-project development visit by the SGP National Coordinator in 2009.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Knowledge tranfer and capacity building based on personal involvement of local people are at the heart of this project and hence dissemination is an integral facet of what is planned.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Local Environmental Volunteer Groups will be trained in effective education techniques.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The Livelihood Support System and Eco-tourism will provide a sustainable alternative source of income for a number of communities around Marshal. This project will help reduce the pressure placed on the unsustainable environmental and other livelihood practices.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will be sustained through income generating Mechanism including fees, Licenses and permits for private tourism firms to operate the beach. Income from livelihood will also be used to sustain the project beyond the GEF support.

Gender Focus

The project will focus on training women as data collectors, biological surveyors for the economic and the social surveys. The women will be empowered to undertake capacity building for local stakeholders for sustainable livelihood.

Policy Impact

The project will help implement the out comes of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan ( NBSAP). The Protected Areas law and the UN Convention Biological Diversity. The project will also help the implementation of CITES and RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands.

Capacity - Building Component

Training of key community personnel in eco-tourism, socio-economic and biological surveys will form the core capacity building initiative of the project. The project will provide technical support and capacity for local stakeholders to protect their environments, empowering the Marshal Communities to determine their own futures
