Conservation of Mangroves Forests on Kajhar Creek Shah Bunder Thatta
Thatta District is one of the focus districts of UNDP GEF ? SGP Pakistan for 2006-2009. The proposed aims to Rehabilitate of Mangroves on Kajhar Creek Shah Bunder for improvement of livelihood of the coastal communities near Kajhar Creek and island of Taluka Shah Bunder. As estimated 0.2 million people depend on this ecosystem for their livelihood and harvest its natural resources for various purposes such as fishing, camel, browsing, buffalo and cattle grazing and wood etc. The need to conserve and rehabilitate the valuable resources of this ecosystem is very vital for coming generation.

Project will adopt participatory approaches of the betterment of ecosystem and generally, the activities will include

1.To set up 02 nurseries in this area.
2.To plant a fast growing and high salted deserted mangroves species, Avicenia and Rhixohora mangroves species along the Creek sides and islands on 700 Acres.
3.To take appropriate action on the threats to wider environment, the coastal communities can learn to take their own action to improve living condition immediately around them.
4.To create awareness of the Threats to the local environment through education, demonstration and community events with on environmental focus.
5.Consultation workshop for NGO and media.
6.Reporting, monitoring and education.
Project Objectives

1. Rehabilitating Mangroves Forest in collaboration with local communities maintenance and management of newly planted tree on Kajhar Creek.
2.Mangrove Resource Management in the coastal area of Shah Bunder

Major anticipated results / output of the projects are

1.Planted mangroves on approximately 700 acres
2.Reduced the activity of over cutting of mangroves by the community
3.The conservation of mangroves for the protection of coast, nutrient retention
4.Reduced the risk of tropical cyclones and sea erosion.
5.Increased fisheries resources, especially shrimp (usually caught away from mangroves) fishing activities with the mangroves.
6.Increased honey production.
7.To ensure active participate of coastal population by constituting local community Boards for the preservation and conservation of mangroves forests.
8.Reduced the risk of cyclones and other natural disasters by rehabilitating the mangroves forests.
9.Increased knowledge of local community NGOs / CBOs / LGI on environment.
