Community Based Sustainable Land Management Project Hingol National Park
Project objectives:
1. Mobilize and organize the local communities, make them aware about the sustainable land management practices in Hingol National Park to prevent land, water and biodiversity losses in the park
2. Introduce and strengthen indigenous sustainable land management practices for preventing land and water resource degradation in the National Park
3. Develop and support the alternative livelihood skills and option of the local communities of Hingol National Park to reduce pressure on increasing agriculture practices
Project Activities
? Mobilize the local communities in four villages on the issues of sustainable land management practices
? Form VOs of the villagers where there are no VOs already established
? Organize organizational and financial management trainings for key office bearers of four VOs
? Publish color pamphlets on the sustainable land management practices in Hingol National Park
? Organize two training workshops on sustainable land management and National Park biodiversity protection
? Construct indigenous field level bundat for the increasing crop production through khushkaba irrigation system
? Provide diesel motors for lifting irrigation water from Hingol River to irrigate and reforest barren lands close to the River
? Level lands of poorest communities to increase crop production in the water scarce areas of National Park
? Establish a community based nursery for tree plantation in the National Park
? Plant 3000 indigenous drought resistance trees for the degraded land rehabilitation and biodiversity enhancement in the Park
? Organize two training workshops on alternative livelihoods including poultry farming, livestock management, local embroidery and its marketing mechanisms etc.
? Organize a training on ? Eco tourism as livelihood option? in the Hingol National Park
? Support repairing of the fishing boat motors and nets of poorest of poor families for doing fishing in coastal waters as alternative livelihood
? Organize Provincial Consultative Workshop on Sustainable Land Management and Eco tourism in Hingol National Park
Project stakeholders and beneficiaries:
Local communities living in and around the National Park, civil society organizations, District Government Lasbela, Forest and Wildlife Department, Agriculture and Livestock Departments, PAMP Hingol National Park, Lasbela University and other agencies and departments are the key stakeholders of the project. However, about 3000 villagers living in four villages of Hingol National Park would be the key beneficiaries of the project.
Anticipated output of project:
? About 2000 villagers [ including women and men] are aware and mobilized on the issues and threats of growing land degradation in their respective areas
? All the villagers of four villages are organized on the platform of the village organizations [VOs] with equal representation of the women in the VOs and their activities
? About 30 office bearers and member of village VOs are trained in organizational and financial management and are properly running the affairs and day to day activities of their VOs
? The village VOs are actively participating in the efforts for solution of the local livelihood and social problems while developing their contacts and links with the district level line departments and elected representatives
? About 50 selected villagers / VO members are trained on community based sustainable land management and biodiversity protection in the area
? The skilled villagers / VO members are actively engaged in transferring the knowledge and skills to other villagers of the area for improving community based sustainable livelihoods in their areas
? About 100 acres of land belonging to the poorest of poor communities has been made able for agriculture crops with the construction of field bundat in the Khushkaba agriculture areas of the National Park
? About 30 acres of land belonging to the poorest of poor communities has been made able for agriculture crops and forestation with the installation of diesel motors and pipes for fetching water from river to the lands.
? Land leveling has improved the agriculture production of 100 acres belong to about 30 poorest families in the khushkaba areas of National Park
? A community based nursery has been established in the National Park for indigenous tree plantation in the park. About four villagers are trained in managing the nursery. About 3000 plants are available for tree plantation in the National Park
? Land degradation has been largely prevented with the plantation of 3000 local drought resistance trees in the various parts of National Park
? About 50 poor villagers of the area have skills in alternative livelihoods including poultry farming, livestock management, local embroidery and its marketing
? About 25 local community members have received skills in eco tourism in the National Park
? Local people have initiated in eco tourism and small scale fishing to reduce pressure on the agriculture and livestock rearing livelihoods
? 10 poor fishermen have received support in the repairing of their nets and also boat motors. This has increased their incomes and ensured the food security of their families
? About 70 different stakeholders including government representatives, university experts, community leaders and civil society actors have discussed have discussed sustainable land management issues and eco tourism options in Hingol National Park and developed recommendations for implementation by the government authorities
? Government authorities are sensitized by sending the consultative workshop report including recommendations for policy actions with regard to sustainable land management and ecotourism in Hingol National Park
