Kuraksu: rehabilitation of rare and valuable animals inhabitancy and organization of rational nature use
The hunting "Kuraksu" is located in Askus and Sarkand areas of the Almaty region in the lower reaches of the Aksu River in south-eastern Kazakhstan. The main part of the hunting "Kuraksu (total area 25306 ha farm) is inundated wood, with inclusions of sand, Aksu river canals, lakes of varying size, and meadows. The basic problem for the conservation of biodiversity is a drying of Aksu river valley, and reduction of inundated lakes level, due to the change of Aksu river watercourse.
Project aim:
Restoration of habitats and biodiversity conservation in terms of hunting on a key site in the Aksu river valley, demonstration of the natural resources sustainable use approaches.
Project tasks:
- Restoration of inundated lakes, meadows (haymakings, pastures)
- Improvement of the inundated wood condition by restoration of two dams on the Aksu River
- Development and introduction of modern management plan for the Kuraksu hunting taking into account biodiversity conservation
- Adjustment of habitats and fauna conditions monitoring
- Propagation of rational wildlife management and protection of rare species among local population and hunters
Project results:
- In "Kuraksu" hunting area ( 25306 hectares) will be restored 3000 hectares of inundated lakes meadows (haymakings, pastures) with an area of 1000 hectares to 5000 hectares and improved the inundated wood condition by restoration of two dams on the Aksu river, ( total volume of 14700 m3) and cleared silted canals.
- In addition to hunting, eight farms receive a direct benefit from the land restoration.
- Will be developed and implemented a modern management plan taking into account the interests of all PT users, and biodiversity conservation, especially globally endangered and rare species.
- Recover additional areas of habitat and increase the number of two globally threatened species - Ferruginous Pochard and brown dove.
- Enhance the skills of 4 members of hunting management staff, established regular (2 cycle counts per year) monitoring of habitats and wildlife. Local people and hunters will be aware of the rare and endangered species, farmers will be involved in biodiversity conservation, and not less than 50% will be reduced damage to livestock grazing in the inundated woods
