Sustainable community development in Svinita

The project aims to provide sustainable livelihoods for a community of laid off miners using the natural resources in the area. The level of awareness, understanding and involvement of the Svinita community will be raised in biodiversity and climate change concerns, with a view to finding means for providing sustainable livelihoods to the locals.

An income generating activity will be initiated consisting of establishing a fig plantation and a drying/packaging equipment using alternative energy sources (photovoltaic panels).
It is foreseen to expand the activities to processing other natural products available in the area using the existing equipment.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

For the sustainable management of the fig plantation the NGO will establish a company, employing laid off miners, payed from the profit made of the commercialization of fig fruits, mushrooms and medicinal plants.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The Svinita community belongs belongs to an etnic Serbian minority, situated in an isolated area of the country with limited possibilities of employment, as the major income generating industry (mining) has been reduced in the area.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The awareness raising activities of the project involve informing sessions, promoting biodiversity conservation, climate change, correlated with the local subsistence needs and poverty reduction.

Capacity - Building Component

The capacity of the local community will be enhanced through trainings, regarding climate change, biodiversity conservation, development of income generating activities.

Notable Community Participation

The community and the Mayoralty from Svinita village and one NGO are participating and co-financing the project activities.

Replication of project activities

The project being promoted through the media, the best practices realized within the project (biodiversity conservation, the use of solar panels) will be replicated in Mehedinti county and they may be replicated in other parts of the county too.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project supports the local community to develop alternative income generation activities based on the biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of its resources (establishment of a fig plantation and of a drying/packaging equipment for dried fruits, plants and mushrooms).

Gender Focus

Women are the main participating members of the project implementation (training activities, local products collection, their conservation) and reporting.

Project Results

- The authorities and the local community engaged themselves unconditionally in energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy resources
- Distribution of a number of 500 flyers and two informing sessions, promoting biodiversity conservation, climate change, correlated with the local subsistence needs and poverty reduction
- 1000 fig seedlings planted
- Poverty reduction by employing the community's laid off miners to the fig plantation realized within the project
- The construction of a drying/packaging equipment using alternative energy sources (photovoltaic panels).
- 1000 individuals benefited from the project: 400 women, 500 men, 100 young persons.
