More light with less CO2 emissions

This is a demonstration project in the rural community of Galesti aiming to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The project will support the local community to change the public lighting system from traditional lighting bodies to energy efficient (LED) lighting bodies and to lighting systems that use solar energy. The mayors of the Niraj microregion will be informed and a seminar will be organized to disseminate the results of the project. Various related activities will be also organised to help the local people to better understand climate change and CO2 emission issues. The Rural Environmental Information and Development Centre in Adrianu Mic will be equipped with a demonstration stand which will be used for training and seminars to inform the participants about the importance of energy efficiency.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

300 persons (including school population) are involved in trainings regarding the climate change and energy related issues, 2,500 locals participate in public awareness activities and 10,000 persons are involved in information activities.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The information activities contribute to the public awareness on climate change.

Notable Community Participation

The local community from Galesti, one school, one NGO and local Mayoralty are involved in the project implementation.

Replication of project activities

The project can be replicated all over the country, there already are city halls that are interested about the outcomes of the projects, as the project has also been presented in a radio broadcast at Targu Mures.

Project sustainability

The project had an innovative character in Romania, as Galesti was the first commune of the country, which changed the public lighting with energy efficient lighting bodies. The project's sustainability is assured by the fact that the energy efficient lighting bodies have a lifetime estimated between 25-30 years

The project indicates the change of the public lighting system from traditional lighting bodies to energy efficient (LED) lighting bodies and to lighting systems that use solar energy in a national scale

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project, by promoting and demonstrating the energy efficiency measures and use of renewable energy sources for public and residential lighting, contributes to the increase in population income.

Capacity - Building Component

The project, through information materials, trainings and public events, contributes to the capacity building at the community level (including school population) regarding the climate change, energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources.

Gender Focus

The women are encouraged to participate in all project activities.

Project Results

- The reduction of greenhouse gases emissions with 590 tonnes by supporting measures of improving energy efficiency and renewable energy resources on the level of local community of Galesti village and by informing the population of Niraj micro-region.
- The change of 138 traditional lighting bodies to energy efficient (LED) lighting bodies and the mounting of two lighting systems that use solar energy.
- The modernization of the water heating system at the Information and Environmental Development Center from Adrianu Mic village
- Mounting of two information panels regarding to the project
- 25000 indigenous people, 120 pupils from Galesti Commune, 4 mayors from Niraj micro-region informed
