This project creates a link between environmental health and human health through the consumption of organically grown foods. It also seeks to develop small organic backyard gardens among persons suffering from diabetes, schools and the community. The specific project objectives are to: (i) promote organic gardening (including composting and recycling) as a link to environmental awareness and better quality and safe food supply of fruits and vegetables; (ii) develop networks to sustain and encourage the use of organic gardening methods and composting/recycling to provide indigenous fruits and vegetables; (iii) market and sell organic produce and gardening resources to provide means of ensuring sustainability; (iv) provide training to members of the Diabetes Association, the community and schools regarding the use of organic gardening techniques, recycling, composting, Good Agriculture Practices (Global GAP) and other alternative approaches to sustainable agriculture ; and (v) determine whether or not the provision of an organic garden to those individuals with a low income and diabetes helps to maintain a low HbA1c levels.

Project strategy includes selection of participants using defined criteria, conducting research, public awareness and education, and establishment of the gardens.
