Community based Mangrove restoration and conservation by Mihinada Parisara Sanvidanaya
Community based Mangrove restoration and conservation by Mihinada Parisara Sanvidanaya
Kalpitiya is the largest lagoon in Sri Lanka and its mangroves were cut and destroyed decades ago for large scale shrimp cultivation. Although many initiatives have taken part to restore the situation still there are large barren stretches with no vegetation. This project aims systematic mangrove replanting and conservation in the effected area surrounding the lagoon. This is done with the participation of villages and other CBO, Awareness creation on conservation among communities and school children through school programs, publications, field visits with practical assignments, developing alternate livelihoods including ornamental fish cultivation and establishing selling points.
