Developing the Traditional Ovens

The project aims to improve the sustainable livelihood of rural families through comprehensive actions and to develop traditional houses and barns, install developed cooking stoves and biogas units, which will have a direct impact on the environment, as well as the climate change issue.
The project will develop 200 ovens, 200 barns and install 16 biogas units, as well as create jobs opportunities for young people to work in the construction or maintenance of those units in the future.
The project aimed to:
- Safety disposal of the organic waste trough the biogas technology
- Reduce harmful emissions by development of the traditional ovens
- Develop 200 Oven / 200 Barns / 10 units Biogas / create jobs opportunity and provide an opportunity for young people to work in construction or maintenance the biogas units.
- organize 12 public meetings
-Work on12 villages
-Targeted beneficiaries, women, family.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

During the project, 37 awareness raising seminars were conducted in 30 poor villages of Sahel Selim, Assuit governorate, attended by 1328 participants (men &women). Issues discussed in those seminars included: climate change problems, benefits of developed ovens, energy efficiency, cheap and clean energy, organic agriculture using organic wastes, focusing on the economic, social, health and environmental benefits resulting from using developed ovens and biogas units.

Gender Focus

One of the main objectives of GEF SGP/ Egypt is to develop, in an integrated way, a gender perspective for the environmental sector, with the goal of improving the quality of life of the population, in particular women and communities, through mitigation and adaptation to the sustainable use of natural resources.

Project sustainability

Sustainability of the project is through a long?term revolving loan system ( as a funding mechanism), to reduce economic burden on the targeted communities, as they become eager to improve their living conditions by conserving natural resources for future generations, and are awaiting for such opportunities to achieve their aim.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The involvement of women in the funded projects ensures the sustainability of the project, especially through a long?term revolving loan system ( as a funding mechanism), to reduce economic burden on the targeted communities, as they become eager to improve their living conditions by conserving natural resources for future generations, and are awaiting for such opportunities to achieve their aim.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project implemented in Assuit, aimed to improve the sustainable livelihood of rural families through comprehensive actions and to develop traditional houses and barns, install developed cooking stoves and biogas units, which had a direct impact on the environment, as well as the climate change issue.

Project Results

By the end of the project, the NGO succeeded in developing 214 ovens, 71 barns and installed 16 biogas units. It also created sustainable jobs opportunities for 7 young people, after providing them with appropriate training, on the construction and maintenance of those units in the future.

- Reducing harmful emissions? level of Carbon Dioxide resulting from the use of traditional ovens used in rural houses, which contributes to the reduction of green house gas emissions.
- Developed ovens prevented burning traditional fuel, such as firewood, different agricultural wastes, as well as dried animal wastes, which cause several respiratory, ophthalmic and eye diseases, especially for women and children, and also pollute the surrounding environment with toxic smoke.
- Improving general health conditions for rural families results in having healthy producers.
- Decreasing the level of rural family expenditures on medical health care and the treatment of diseases resulting in air pollution, which have a direct impact on improving their economic conditions.
- Empowerment of rural women in a clean environment.
- Improving the quality of bread and cooking produced, as a result of using clean environmental fuel.
- Creating job opportunities for young people in the construction and maintenance of those developed ovens.
- Creating job opportunities for young women making home bread and selling it to increase the family income
