Participatory Technology Development on Organic Vegetable Production with Sustainable Soil Management for Livelihood Enhancement Project
In the hills of Baglung, maize is the main staple crop grown on rainfed bari land. The main cropping patterns are maize relayed by millet, maize-fallow or maize sequential with mustard. In some limited areas maize and beans are also mixed cropped. Farmers have been adopting cereals based cropping pattern (Maize-Millet-fallow) with minimum application of FYM and depend on residual soil nutrients that is available in the soil. At high altitude maize is also relayed with peas and soybean. In a typical slopping land, where maize is planted, soil loss is also high.
Therefore, there is a potential scope to increase the cropping intensity as well as improving soil fertility through the inclusion of appropriate types of legume crops and varieties in the existing cropping patterns and by use of organic manure and bio-pesticide. Participatory Variety Selection (PVS) will be done to identify the suitable crop selection.
