Using Banana Waste to ensure better livelihoods, Income opportunities through environmentally favorable women enterprise
Objective:
The project has set the following objectives:
? Strengthen the Rural Women SHGs in Micro Enterprises for enhancing their income generation capacity
? Check the fiber waste in the villages and ensure better utilization of the resources. This will help to control release of methane generation.
? Empower the economic and social status of Rural women through alternate employment. Building capacities in managing simple technologies through they themselves
? Protect the environment by harvesting wealth from agricultural waste. This will have spillover effects in all villages and possible scaling up can also be seen

Output:
The project would achieve the following outputs:
? 90 Rural marginalized Farm labour women gained self employment by providing the raw materials.
? Individual member earned Rs.2000/- as additional income every month apart from working as casual labourers in the farm sector
? Women members gained Self respect and dignity in the Male dominated society
? Gender bias, violence at home, family disharmony have come down substantially
? The process of extracting fiber from banana stem has reduced the incidence of bacterial blight etc in the banana plantations in the target area
? Check release of methane from the decayed banana fibre.
? The intervention has paved the way for a Clean and Healthy Environment in the target area
? The Success of the Banana Fiber and Craft Micro Enterprises have shown the way for Replication of the programme in other banana plantation areas in MNTN service villages

? Capacity Building of the Project Team and the NGO
? MoU with Ecogreen Unit, the technical providers
? Establishment of the technology unit
? Collection, Production and Marketing of banana stems, fiber etc
? MoU with the Banana Plantation owners
? Raw materials collection at the SHGs level
? Linkages development with other stakeholders
? Participatory exercises for work plan finalization

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
During the implementation of the project marginalized farm labours gained self employment by providing the raw materials. As such the individudal members earned Rs. 2000/- as additional income every month apart from working as casual labourers in the farm sector.
Gender Focus
The project has a clear focus on the important issue of economic empowerment of women. The targeted villages are predominantly agricultral villages with no other occupation. The literacy rate is also at low. Most of the rural women are farm workers and have no other sources of income. The project plans to the direct involment of women in the working federation. The federation will be spread in 15 villages and the project will directly benefit 90 women among the 300 members.
