Bamboo People and the Environment in Lesotho
The main goal of the project is to preserve and promote Lesotho?s biological diversity, reduce land degradation and generate income through plantation and processing of indigenous and exotic/ornamental bamboo. Objectives include but are not limited to mobilization of five (5) community groups in Liqoabing area to form legally registered entities for ease of bamboo project implementation, capacitating of eighty (80) communitiy members from five registered groups with technical skills training in bamboo production and management, establishment of a nursery of +3000 seedling capacity in the Liqoabing area for seedling transplanation to the gullies and monitoring of effective performance and assessment of the impact of the bamboo project in Liqoabing.

Capacity - Building Component
5 community groups which include among others, HIVand AIDS support group will be assisted to register as a legal entity. The community groups will be trained on bamboo propagation and plantation and in bamboo crafts making; and in marketing and business management.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The Ministry of Forestry and Land Reclamation is tryning different approches and innovations for land rehabilitation. Communities are encouraged to engage in establishsemnt of community tree nurseries to supply the ministry with trees for national afforestation programmes. Bamboo is among the plants that the ministry wants to start using and as such the project by by establishing a bamboo nursery is positioning itself to tap this market. Use of bamboo in project land rehabilitation activities is aimed at production of roofing material and raw material for crafts that be be sold; possible sale of sprouts for income generation.
