? The project will help with policy implementation; the law enforces on used oil pollution have been facing limitations as the public did not have any facilities to dispose their oil. The availability of such facilities will help make it easier for the law enforcers.
? The public awareness carried out has enlightened the people and they will be no excuses for improper disposal and illegal uses.
? Used oil is one of the ingredients that could be used for bio-fuel, the government has looked into ways of producing such and the used oil collected in these tanks and many others could help in the long run.
Although used oil handlers are mostly males as workshop managers, mechanics, machine operators and farmers, the issue of used oil is gender indiscriminate. Since the effects of used oil affect all, this project will target both males and females to educate and empower. The project will also focus on both young and adults.
Capacity - Building Component
The project will capacitate the local communities through the public education that will be conducted during commissioning of the receptacles. The public education shall consist of awareness on the environmental and health effects of used oil and its proper disposal. Demonstrations on proper handling and disposal of used oil shall be conducted. This will be to capacitate the communities on the practicality of the matter.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project will ensure to achieve promotion of public awareness of global environment through the kgotla meetings, promotional activities and commissioning of receptacles. The fact that pollution occurring at the beginning or in the middle of the river affects those at the receiving end shall be stressed. Printed materials will also be used to promote public awareness of global environment. The media has been of great assistance in dispersing the message to the general public in the first phase of this project. It is therefore the intentions of the trust to continue using this much effective tool to cover a wider audience not only in the identified areas but country wide.
Notable Community Participation
The proposed depository sites are solely for the benefit of the communities. In effect there are two kinds of tanks, customer and community tanks. The former kind is supplied to the customers who buy lubricants through formalized tenders from the lubricant supplier. The latter, on the other hand, are the ones that are solely for community use and are the ones to be funded under this project.
Mismanagement of used oil leading to environmental pollution will ultimately negatively affect the very people who caused the pollution. By providing the community with receptacles the project wants to protect the environment from used oil pollution so that the community will continue to enjoy a healthy environment.
Project sustainability
The tanks were installed with partnership from the local authorities and their maintenance lies with them. The trust through its collectors will facilitate the collection. The trust will also help where necessary with cleaning of spillages. The trust is run from a levy contribution by the oil companies.
In future with more collectors coming aboard, the trust will charge a minimum fee to the collectors. The funds collected will be used to maintain the tanks.
Planning non gef grant
The trust is looking at different avenues to fund the scaling up project. There is nothing concrete at the moment but proposals have been sent out.
Planning gef grant
The trust would like to scale up to a medium sized GEF grant. Depending on the amount granted, it would be possible to purchase transfer pumps for the bigger tanks to enable easy disposal of oil into bigger tanks, and also carryout more awareness campaigns around the country more especially in the remote areas where people are not yet aware of the adverse impacts of used oil on the environment. This will ensure sustainability of the trust and also creation of employment and saving of the environment from the effects of oil contamination.
Replication of project activities
There is a large demand country wide for such facilities. The trust with the help of donors will continue citing tanks around the country for public use. A larger number of places are still without tanks.
Linkages gef projects
This project if scaled up it could employ more than 200 people country wide. This could then be linked to other GEF projects (manufacturing, service).
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
This project promotes a clean environment free from used oil pollution; this will therefore promote sustainable livelihoods among communities. A clean environment will mean a healthy community/ nation. The nation will enjoy water free from used oil pollution and clean soils that will enable fruitful farming for sustenance. Employment created with the growth of the oil collection industry will be of great importance as the world economy is in recess and lots of jobs are being lost.
Policy Impact
Tshole Trust objectives includes encouraging the adoption and effective implementation of legislation and policies, which promote waste oil management, processes, resource utilisation, and waste oil disposal practices. With the right facilities and increased recovery of used oil and awareness on used oil management advocating for used oil management policy will be made easier.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Used oil is a resource in itself that poses opportunity for innovative financial mechanisms. As eluded above used oil collection, cleaning, transportation and recycling are business opportunities that Batswana can embark upon for financial gains hence a cleaner environment. To achieve this, the project shall encourage Batswana to embark in these businesses.

Activities Performed under this Agreement:
The project has managed to carry out the following activities:
? Purchased four 23 000 litres capacity receptacles/ tanks
? Purchased four (4) Oil traps
? Installed and cited all the ten tanks and oil traps in the areas indicated below. Designed and printed public/awareness materials (1000 brochures, 1000 posters, 50 caps and 50 T-shirts)
? Held public awareness meetings in all the villages prior to the installation of tanks
The project through the help of the councils has managed to site receptacle/tanks and the oil traps in all the villages that were chosen, which are as follows;

? Serowe
? Letlhakane
Inspections of the tanks are on going as of now and they will be followed by their official launching. Further visits will be undertaken in all the areas to assess the situation after about two- three months. The trust is in touch with the local authorities on the state of the tanks on regular basis.
Results:
Describe to what extent the objectives of the Agreement were accomplished:
1. The project was completed successfully. All the four tanks and traps were installed properly. We are hoping that the tanks will be operational immediately after the installation of pumps.
2. The awareness campaigns were done successfully in all the areas where tanks were being installed. This was to educate the communities on used oil management and also to make them aware of the existence of the tanks in their areas.
Describe the immediate benefits received by the participants and/or the recipient communities:
1. Through communication with the local authorities the project has managed to identify the local needs for used oil management. This will help with the implementation of awareness raising activities to curb this problem. The project has managed to identify backyard mechanics as the most people who need to be equipped with used oil management information.
2. Installed tanks will benefit all the used oil generators as they now have facilities to dispose it off properly.
3. The environment has also benefited from this project as there will be less pollution from used oil hence enabling it to perform at its best in providing for the communities in and around it.
Describe long-term benefits:
1. The long term benefits include a clean and a healthy environment. With less pollution from used oil, the communities will enjoy a clean and productive environment.
2. Business opportunities in used oil collection and recycling could create employment and income for some households. The increase in volumes of recovered oil would enable the industry to come up with a recycling plant which would create employment for the locals
