Upgrading Existing Used Oil Infrastructure to Increase Recovery
Upgrading Existing Used Oil Infrastructure to Increase Recovery
This project proposal is aimed at upgrading the existing used oil collection infrastructure which has been built over the years country wide with the help of different donors. Recently the Trust installed some tanks around the country, with the funding assistance from GEF Small Grants Programme. Ten (10) tanks and oil traps were installed. The tanks are used effectively by the different communities. The tanks are filled up with used oil at an average of two to three weeks for all the places. However, for the remote areas like Kasane, Maun (Ngamiland), Ghanzi and Tsabong, collection from these tanks has been a problem. This has resulted in overfilling of the tanks and spillages into the bund walls, traps and on the ground as a result of irregular collection. The initial intentions of citing the tanks are thus defeated. The three registered and licensed used oil collectors are based in Gaborone, Pilane and Francistown. The collectors are private companies who are profit driven. Collection from these remote areas has been irregular/ inconsistent as the collectors argue that it is uneconomic to travel a long distance with a bigger tanker (9000 litres to 23 000 litres) to collect only 2000 litres of used oil.
The trust proposes to construct bulking points of a minimum capacity of 15-20 m3 (15 000- 20 000 litres). The smaller tanks and other used oil generating points will bulk their oil in the bigger tanks. This will take an average of 1 to 3 months before it fills up depending on the amount of oil in the area. The collectors will have enough oil to fill their tankers and it will be economic and worth taking the long trips to the remote areas hence saving the environment.

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Influence
? The project will help with policy implementation; the law enforces on used oil pollution have been facing limitations as the public did not have any facilities to dispose their oil. The availability of such facilities will help make it easier for the law enforcers. ? The public awareness carried out has enlightened the people and they will be no excuses for improper disposal and illegal uses. ? Used oil is one of the ingredients that could be used for bio-fuel, the government has looked into ways of producing such and the used oil collected in these tanks and many others could help in the long run.
Gender Focus
Although used oil handlers are mostly males as workshop managers, mechanics, machine operators and farmers, the issue of used oil is gender indiscriminate. Since the effects of used oil affect all, this project will target both males and females to educate and empower. The project will also focus on both young and adults.
