Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness creation programs will be done including awareness creation for, Government and non government, media personnel etc.

Home gardens will be developed as and additional income generation. Medicinal gardens and food crops will be established in the selected area.

Project sustainability

Maintaining positive attitudes among the villagers towards an organic farming would be significant for the sustainability of the project. Home gardening requires a large quantity of water. But at present water has become the limiting factor for the development of the life style of the villagers. Therefore ensuring supply of water is a must. Converting the grassland above the Johnston estate into an agro-forestry system could be helpful to increase the water availability in the area. Continuous monitoring and financial and technical help also would be an important support system required for the sustainability of the project. Community coherence is vital with a project like this to achieve a common goal.

This project is totally community based implementation. At the beginning, 100 beneficiary families will be selected.

Training programs are implemented for beneficiaries.

Project Results

Since the implementation of the project soil erosion has significantly stopped, improving the quality of soil. The bare land has converted into a fruitful green landscape. Organic farming provided food for household and also generates an income for many villagers. All houses have improved kitchens such that organic waste is converted into liquid fertilizer in the very gardens. Villagers are extremely happy about the present condition except for one critical issue; lack of sufficient water for consumption and gardening. Villagers and the project officers have developed a strong relationship which is the most significant impact for the sustainability of the project. Artificially constructed terraces are developing and blending into the natural system. Live-fences in the other hand protect and conserve the top soil generated in each home garden very successfully. Two NGOs (ACSES & IOM) support the project by constructing toilets and fixing a few other sanitary and hygiene requirements which are costing 5 lakhs SLR. Local authority donated 25000.00 Sri Lankan Rupees. Fruit trees and medicinal plants are gradually growing. All constructed retention walls are established properly
