Promotion of Energy Efficient Technologies in Thatta
Pakistan is faced multi-dimensional problems from worst form environmental degradation to ever rising poverty in the masses especially the rural areas where the livelihood largely connected with natural resources. Land degradation, deforestation due to human activity as well as natural causes, increased pollution of lakes, sea and other sweet and brackish water are few to mention. The country is locked with the vicious circle of poverty and environmental degradation as the volume of the degradation of the natural resources increases as the poverty levels increase in Pakistan.Keeping such situation in view IDO intends to initiate Community based Alternative and Efficient Energy Project in Thatta District Sindh to reduce indoor pollution and prevent depletion of forests through the awareness and use of alternative and energy efficient products. The project is aimed at mobilizing and organizing the communities, creating awareness among them about the use of alternative energy efficient products as well as introducing such products for mass replication.
Project objectives:
1.Mobilize and organize the communities to increase awareness, skills and entrepreneurship among communities for adopting energy efficient technologies and products
2.Familiarize Energy Efficient Products to reduce indoor air pollution and bio-mass use, and promote health of women;
3.Awareness raising among the communities regarding sustainable use of natural resources;
Activities under Objective -1:
? Conduct baseline survey of the villages/area
? Organize 40 mobilization meetings with the communities of 20 villages
? Organize CCB formation meetings in 20 Villages
? Conduct organizational and financial management trainings for 10 CCBs
? Organize 4 entrepreneurship trainings for manufacturing and installation of the energy saving products
? Registration of community organizations as CCBs
? Facilitate CCBs in designing community projects related to energy efficiency
? Create liaison of CCBs with District Government to access funds for projects
Activities under Objective -2:
? Install 1000 units of energy efficient stoves
? Introduce 75 solar lanterns
Activities under Objective -3:
? Publish 4 quarterly newsletters containing stories from field and articles regarding sustainable use of natural resources;
? Publish 3 posters in Sindhi, Urdu and English about conservation of natural resources
? Publish 3 Pamphlets about sustainable use of natural resources
? Publish project brochure
? Production of video documentary
? 200 Video Documentary CDs distributed among stakeholders

Project sustainability
In this project, the project activities have been designed in a way that would ensure the sustainability of the project activities even after the project funds are over.
In this connection, the sensitized and aware communities with their local organizations in the form of CCBs/COs would play a key role. In place of individual capacity building and skill development mechanisms the project seeks to develop local level organizations, build their organizational skills to ensure their sustainability. The existence of the community organizations with organizational as well as conservation of energy through use of energy efficient products would ensure the continuity in the activities of organizational as well as skill development in the area even after the completion of the project.
