2. Keeping on launching capacity ?building activities for target population
3. Keeping on demonstrating energy saving/energy efficiency at community scale
4. Keeping on disseminating project results and advocacy
Results of activities:
1. Acquired additional detailed data & information on attitudes of target communities regarding global warming: energy conservation , forest as a carbon sink, and reuse-recycle
2. Increased conservation awareness of all targeted groups witnessed through active participation as follows:
? youth core leaders applying for staff membership in Thai Environment Day campaign with classified 30 teams focusing on fighting global warming in urban area
? youth core leaders in eight schools initiating reuse-recycle and energy conservation projects
? Several youth members changing behavior witnessed by bringing their own cups for water drinking
? Emergence of a global warming fighting network among schools with committed staff as volunteer to support activities of GWWNET
3. Witnessed 25-30 regular bike users/working day and 80-100 on Saturday or Sunday , following the official opening the bike land around the moat ? a change
4. Compilation of two curriculums devised to curb global warming in model communities (in rural area)
5. Emergence of the following demonstration site for promoting renewable energy and conserving ecosystems:
? One mini hydro
? 93 high-efficiency stoves
? Four biogas facilities
? Community forest of 430-ha being demarcated and under sustainable use plan of target communities
Project communication:
1.On September 20, 2009, the project organized a Car Free Day where mass media of all types were notified. And there was a dissemination event at the Chiangmai City Hall.
2. On December 3-4 ( Thai Environment Day), the project was more visible through several types of mass media. The Television Channel 11 recorded the event to be air later.
3. The project was made more visible through the project website and website of the Regional Environment Office 1, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.
4.The project was mad more visible through the radio programme ? Give Life of Environment ? of Radio Thailand , every Monday, and through FM 93.25 Mhz and AM 636 Khz , every Thursday.
Experience ,lessons learnt, problems and issues:
The project referred to the followings:
1.Due to unexpected business of the grantee during August 2009 ? January 2010, some project activities were not carried out as planned. There had been errors in communication. This would be addressed through telephone conversation instead of holding a meeting.
2.Since some planned activities required both financial and human resources from network members such as (Rakthai Foundation and IMPECT), personnel of the network might lack relevant experience to work in different project locations. More experience sharing was needed to address this issue.
Project expense:
The project reported the accumulated expense of THB: 732,672 out of the sum of first & second disbursement of THB:798,039.67.
III. Monitoring Visit (November 12, 2010):
Findings & Observation:
One of the ten proposed project?s community models in San Kamphaeng District?s Baan(village) Mae Phahaen was visited. It is an agricultural community in irrigated flat land area just outside the Chiangmai Provincial Town. Paddies, horticulture and other seasonal crops are grown for consumption, and supplementary income. About twenty out of several hundred households were practicing husbandry as a model for self-sufficiency economy. This practice included raising cows for milk ? a potential source of animal manual to trap energy from.
Two out of ten households in the village participating in the course of the project were selected for interaction. The first,a five-member with 14 cows, had a biogas pit supplying cooking gas to kitchen successfully for more than 14 months. It was confirmed that the consumption of conventional energy
(LPG) was reduced approximately 40 %, implying a certain amount of CO2 avoided from this family.
A few kilometers away, another operational biogas pit of the same design but a little bit different method for supplying manure to the digester was witnessed. Personal satisfaction of the family towards the biogas was sensed ? significantly less burden than before to seek fire-woods for family cooking ?thus an example to use fire-woods in a sustainable way and avoid net increase in CO2.
Up in a higher terrain in Mae Taeng District, the visiting team spent two hours interacting with staff and students of the community school in Mae Taeng District? s Baan Muang Kued. What were witnessed in term of project activities included local sets of curriculum on global warming ? its causes and effect and practice recommendation to reverse it. An instruction class for 8-grade students was observed in which a subject on internal combustion engines used in transports and their emitted pollution and green house gas was taught. Following the class, the students demonstrated their capacity in identifying chemical components of the exhaust from the visiting team?s van.
The following day, in the meeting room of one network member the visiting team was briefed about activities in other model communities which were not visited due to time constraint. High efficiency and biomass stove built by target communities were two major achievements shared to the team. Note: During the visit , the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources? Regional Environment Office 1, Chiangmai, generously contributed THB: 4,000 for transportation (in kind).
