I. First Progress Report (15 March 2010):
Undertaken activities:
1. Launching capacity building and networking activities on relevant technical and institutional issues through regular meeting/seminars and training
2. Launching campaigns among eight pilot community schools and wider public to rehabilitate degrading coastal habitat and reduce land-based pollution

Result and Indicators:
1.Increased institutional capacity of 174 network members and targeted population at village/tambol level witnessed through systematic communication and sharing of experience
2.Emergence of an official women network for conservation of Ao Baan Don
3. Witnessed more intact cooperation between communities and school where community members managing to establish facilities for sharing knowledge in school libraries called ? Knowledge Corners for Environment Conservation?.
4. Emergence of practical work plans at provincial level
5. Quantifiable results as follows:
? 1,000,000 marine species being released into Tapi River and Ao Baan Don
? 3,000 EM balls being dropped into Tapi River and Ao Baan Don

Project Communication:
Most communication activities were carried out during the undertaken activities through open forum and other public events which saw participation from sectors in the province and at regional level.

Project Expense:
The project report the expense of THB: 637,739 out of the first disbursement of THB: 373,390.78

II. Monitoring Visit by the NC & NSC (March 18, 2010):
Findings & Observation:
At the premises of Phumriang municipality in Chaiya District, one of the seven targeted coastal districts along the Ao Baan Don Bay, the visiting team witnessed a capacity building activity focusing on community right in management of natural resources process. About 70 representatives mostly woman, from concerned organizations in coastal area of southern Thailand, including some from the project, were seen participating in the events.

At another community premises in the district, the visiting team listened to 10 project leaders who gave a briefing on progress of activities and emerging issues. Currently, the project had carried out nearly all proposed capacity building activities resulting in wider forged networks of coastal conservation, clear network organizational structure, increased technical capacity on land-based pollution reduction and coastal protection. It was interesting to see nearly all leaders that were present expressing their views on community development.

The visiting team was then led to witness a mangrove area which the project had reclaimed and used as a boundary for coastal protection against the still existing less well planned land use by both public and private sectors. Such a land use included shrimp farm, plantation of pararubber and oil palm and other types of urbanized infrastructure. Destructive fishing to push and dragnet of big entrepreneurs was referred to as an on-going issue but being partly addressed by cooperation and assistance by the Royal Thai Army Region 4 who deployed a squad of soldier and police to help in coastal surveillance. Another hotter issue appeared to be coastal erosion. Project leaders related that recent study tour to other successful coastal communities, including one SGP had given rise to an idea how to reduce such erosion.

III. Second progress report (January 12, 2011)
Activities undertaken:
1. Keeping on launching capacity building and networking activities on relevant technical and institutional issues through regular meeting/seminars and training
2. Resources inventorying (fishing gears, fishing seasons, catches and pattern of consumption) through survey and sharing
3. Demonstrating sustainable use of resources
4. Disseminating project results

Results of activities:
1. Both area-based and problem based situation being updated regularly with successive collective protection plans initiated
2. Communications between tambol levels and the provincial network appearing being facilitated
3. Increased capacity of women?s fisher groups ( 81 women and 16 men) regarding small scale fishing laws and coastal resources conservation
4. Initiated natural collaboration among fishing groups at regional level with proposed organizational structure
5. Compilation of precise documents on local fishing gears being ready to disseminated and for reference (500 sets)
6. Two community groups (28 households) gathering together to demonstrate alternative occupation to reduce threats on coastal resources
7. Sets of dissemination materials ( exhibition set and VCD sets -300 in total ) being created under and under editing ?expected to be ready within a few weeks

Experience ,lessons learnt, problems and issues:
The November-December flood caused a heavy damage to project location, especially, cultivated and aqua culture area. But this sustainable livelihood activities would be kept on.

Project expense:
The project report the accumulated expense of THB: 910,999 out of the sum of first and second disbursement of THB: 721,748.6.

4. Emergence of community-based environment management plans being proposed for financial support to the provincial fishery office ? approved budget THB: 4,800,000
5. Increased capacity of women?s group continuously participating in project activities , several being elected representatives of community-based organizations
6. Emergence of practical work plans incorporated into conservation plans of TAO for 3-5 year implementation

Project Communication:
The network had its website to communicate with public regarding its history, organizational structure , community activities such as eco-tourism and specific community products.

Plans and Activities for Sustainability:
The project would keep on its commitments with networks members by sharing thought and ideas. In addition to planned activities under the THB: 4,800,000- support from the province, supplementary or alternative livelihood would be encouraged among communities. This would involve an establishment of a rotating fund, a portion of some savings would be used for conservation activities.

Experience , Lessons Learnt , Problems and Issues:
During the past two years, it was evinced that number of marine species was increasing thus income of communities. The main problem, however, was the difficulties in demarcating conservation zone 3,000 meters into the sea and in removing private cram farms. These two activities had not been very successful, on account of lack of transparency of some politicians and government officers. Among network members and TAOs, it was agreed that relevant local acts should be formulated and enforced. With such an enforcement, conflict in resources uses would be tremendously reduced. Currently, five target locations were drafting such an act.
