Building Network for Conservation of Ao Baan Don
Building Network for Conservation of Ao Baan Don
Location of project: An integrated marine and coastal ecosystems of the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea in Ao (Gulf) Baan Don of Surathani Province with 120 km.long, the area once was rated as one of the richest spot in the Gulf of Thailand with various types of habitats such as mangrove, sea grass, and coral reefs. Now the area was degraded through aqua culture, destructive fishing (push and drag net by big entrepreneurs), land based pollution , conflict in resources use , and lack of persistent sectoral cooperation. The location was proclaimed as a wetland with international importance in August 1, 2000.

Target Population: 2,460 families, with 8,200 members, in project location of seven districts ( Muang, Phunphin,Tha Charng, Chaiya, Kanchanadit, Don Sak and Tha Chana), whose livelihood activities depend upon provisions of marine and coastal ecosystems and fishery related business. Of these, 392 families are direct project participants.

Main Activities:
1. Resources inventorying (fishing gears, fishing seasons, catches and pattern of consumption) through survey and sharing
2. Launching capacity building and networking activities on relevant technical and institutional issues through regular meeting/seminars and training
3. Launching campaigns among eight pilot community schools and wider public to rehabilitate degrading coastal habitat and reduce land-based pollution
4. Demonstrating sustainable use of resources
5. Disseminating project results

Main Anticipated Result:
1. Denser habitats, such as sea grass and mangrove, with increased water species, some rare, based on sampling data from community market
2. Evinced cleaner of project area-reduced land-based pollution
3. Emergence of community-based environment management plans supported and collectively practiced by TAOs, PAO and municipalities
4. Community-based enactments on sustainable use of natural resources by local government units , at least in three locations
5. Community-based regulations in protection of coastal and marine resources in all locations of the project.
6. Emergence of youth networks both within and outside educational institutes
