Micro hydro for Dayak Basap Indigenous Community in Sumbang Bay, East Kalimantan
Project Development Goal:
Forest area conservation through electricity management of micro hydro power plant, knowledge management, and economy-ecology based business initiatives regarding non-timber forest products

Project Objectives:
1. To strengthen ownership and to expand understanding among community regarding forest conservation with positive contributions to reduce carbon emissions, to protect water catchments area, and to conserve biodiversity;
2. To increase capacity for communities to manage and to utilize micro hydro based electricity by applying techno-social method related with activities to protect water catchments area and forest conservation;
3. To develop economy-ecology business unit based on Non Timber Forest Product and its market link-up;
4. To share and to document information and knowledge as part of knowledge management process;

Expected output:
1. Established one unit of micro hydro power plant in prime condition;
2. Strong commitment from the community to manage water catchments area and biodiversity protection, and forest conservation;
3. Increasing techno-social capacity of the communities in managing micro hydro power plant related with forest conservation, and to establish adequate mechanism of management institution
4. Established economy-ecology business unit based on Non Timber Forest Product and increasing product quality and its added value by benefiting electricity supply. Beside it should also increase market link-up in supporting marketing systems.
5. Variety methods for information dissemination and knowledge sharing.

Activities to be conducted:
1. Conducting village level workshop
2. Conducting social-economy review on potential commodity (Non Timber Forest Product)
3. Managing micro hydro power plant
a. Training for operational usage of micro hydro power plant
b. Strengthening mechanism and working plan of management institution
4. Managing water catchments area related with micro hydro power plant
a. Mapping the water catchments area;
b. Monitoring the water catchments area;
c. Restoring forest by enriching local plants such as rattans, gaharu (Aguilaria sp), and herbals.
5. Providing training packages on: participative mapping, forest monitoring, and agro-forestry pattern development.
6. Developing productive business:
a. Choosing/selecting two types of primary productive business;
b. Facilitating business plan, including: Business Description, Marketing, Financial, and Management
c. Facilitating capital to initiate business; applying joint-business concept by involving shareholders, commencing shares on working capital, and providing working capital scheme limited only for group members
d. Assisting productive business management
7. Increasing community capacity and strengthening organizational skills
a. Training on rattan cultivation
b. Training on handicraft development
c. Training on entrepreneurship
d. Training on organizational management
e. Assisting business group or community
8. Providing business capital
a. Providing product processing tools
b. Increasing women?s roles
9. Disseminating Information
a. Workshop
