Community Based Approach to mitigate environmental threats and generate sustainable livelihood options
Community Based Approach to mitigate environmental threats and generate sustainable livelihood options
Objective:
? Creation of water harvesting structures, which can also be used for fish culture as additional source of income.
? Increase the productivity of marginal and degraded farmland. Being a high rainfall upland area, ample scope exists at the project site to harvest the rainwater for recharging the ground water table and thus increasing the inherent productive capacity of the farm land.
? Introduce farm-forestry practices to serve twin purposes, one, arresting the run off of rain water and arresting top-soil erosion, thus adding to recharge of ground water, and two, enhancing family income through increase in land productivity and making available the cash/short rotation crops through agro-forestry model.
? Increase productivity under agro-forestry model with the use of high yielding variety seeds/planting materials.
? Saving financial resources of the beneficiaries by raising fire-wood species in agro-forestry model with the help of State Forest Department.
? Instill a sense of self-dependency and economic viability among the beneficiaries through the formation of self help groups and setting up and management of revolving funds.
Instilling a sense of awareness and responsibility among the target beneficiaries for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring sustainability while resorting to different economic generation activities.

Output:
? Run-off of rain water will get arrested leading to increase in the ground water recharge and rise in water table. This will add to the farm based productivity.
? Activity based self help groups [1 SHG each for pisciculture, agro-horti-forestry, and social forestry in each of the 8 wards (total 24 SHGs)] will be formed with the provisions of revolving funds that would raise economic status of the beneficiaries. Special emphasis will be given to have Women SHGs.
? Collaborations and linkages with the local Panchayats and other line departments will be established for technical inputs during the project.
? A comprehensive data base on the economic and social aspects of the beneficiaries will be generated.

Activities:
Major activities in the proposed project:
? Survey of the Project area for collection of base line detailed information and status on the socio-economic, demography and ecology
? Formation of SHGs for awareness campaign and capacity building training programme for the SHGs on aspects related to creation of water-recharge structures, fish culture, farm-forestry practices, etc.
? Creation of water recharge structures, raising agro-horti-forestry, and social forestry plantations for select households.
? Terminal Workshop/seminar for dissemination of results and future planning for sustainability and repeatability.
Data analysis, compilation and report writing and submission of the final project report.

Project Characteristics and Results
Replication of project activities
? A series of ice breaking meetings were held in first few months with the members of panchayat and other local residents of the village. ?Group discussion for community mobilization. ?One to one discussion with individual families rather than holding group meetings with a mix of people belonging to different age/vocation/economic status.
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity building training workshops will be conducted involving target beneficiaries, local public representatives, key government department officials and experts in concerned fields of activities. Workshops will be conducted at the project field site for demonstration of techniques and technologies associated with different project components i.e. creation of water recharge structure; pisciculture, agro-horti forestry and social forestry practice. Latest technology and expertise has been introduced for the project purpose. The Pentagonal system of plantation has been introduced for plantation purpose.
