III.Monitoring Visit by NC & NSC(January 27,2010):
Findings & Observation;
At Tambol Songkhanong?s Baan (village) Parkate, target location and the office of the grantee, the visiting team was met by two project leaders and five members who are stakeholders from neighbouring Tambols, who gave a brief about project activities and spots of eco-tourism. Two bicycle routes of the project were designed with some portion already open for tourism. It could be said that participation and cooperation from these stakeholders, who are practicing environmentally-friendly agriculture and eco-tourism, was a result of project outreach.
In order to understand more the ecosystems of the location, the visiting team took a bicycle tour on a portion of one bike route. The location appeared to be a ? community forest ? in the heart of a big city. Of Mon and Thai cultural group, community members of Baan Parkate seemed to have and tried to maintain their simple livelihood, even though common utility and things of modern daily life are readily accessible. The location is a low flat land along river basin, an estuary, many houses are of raised up types with gardens or plants in between.
With location as a nook, the location was declared a conservation zone involving participation of both GO and NGO to establish community forest and promote livelihood development. An area of about 10 out of the entire 1,900 ha was allocated for such and classified into community park, demonstration plot for nature study, landrace plot, mangrove plot and agro-forestry. These areas would be toured through bicycle routes. In addition, places of cultural significance were also included in the bike routes.
According to project leaders, approximately 10,000 tourists visited the place using the bicycles provided by the project during last year. However, this short visit fell on school day so did not give an opportunity for the visiting team to meet with youth members who were trained to be tour guides.
Based on this brief visit and interaction, the visiting team was satisfied with maintained value of ecosystems and livelihood of target population. The project could provide a model for making urban community forest in several communities in Bangkok suburban. Average person in Bangkok might not learn about existence of such a place as this nook. Nevertheless , in term of activity progress and result, it was felt that there were still a few major proposed activities to catch up with. In term of outreach, the project fared fairly well by involving other stakeholders as mentioned above including the Samutprakarn Bicycle Club of Tambol Bangkrasorb in the nook.
