Rehabilitating Mangrove Forest and Increasing Economic Welfare of Community in Sei Berombang Village, Labuhan Batu District, North Sumatra
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT GOAL:
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT GOAL:
To avoid major changes from forest into cultivation land (both farming and fisheries) due lack of knowledge on legal aspect, weak local organization, lack of participation and low living standard of the community

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
1. To increase local organization capacity and community participation
2. To avoid damage on mangrove forest and change on ecosystem and habitat that directly affect availability of food production and global warming that will trigger climate change.
3. To rehabilitate sustainable mangrove forest in order to increase living standard of the community due to its directly correlation with sea ecosystem that stand as main livelihood of coastal communities mainly works as fisherfolks

EXPECTED OUTPUTS:
1. Increased local organization capacity and community participation.
a. Establishment of community groups such as women and youth groups
b. Establishment of community organization with clear vision, mission, and working plan
c. Socialization of community working plan and sharing experiences on coastal management
2. Rehabilitated 5 hectares mangrove area (Pilot Project)
a. Community in general and members of PPN (fishers group) will participatory rehabilitate 5 hectares of mangrove area by applying direct participatory method by the community themselves or involving any the related institutions.
b. Transek Village Mapping. It will be created by community and consist of sketch of the area in surrounding the community. The map will act as initial data to determine borders and division of area for cultivation and protection zones that decided by the community in participatory method.
c. Draft village macro village planning.
d. Reduced abrasion as the result of mangrove rehabilitation activities and the expansion of the mangrove planted area to the sea.
e. Data on biodiversity and ethno-botany managed by community.
3. Increased living standard of Sei Berombang village community.
a. Improving mangrove resources management since mangrove plays an important role for several animals such as fishes, shrimps, and mollusc because it provides protection and organic foods in food cycle.
b. Existing sample unit of mangrove leaves production into mangrove tea
c. Existing Village Seeds Garden (KBD) of Sei Berombang village managed by PPN. This place is expected to act as mangrove seeds provider for the other communities and as joint learning centre. It will consist of data, documentation of seeding process and biodiversities which later benefit any research done in the area.

ACTIVITIES TO BE CONDUCTED:
1. Increasing local organization capacity and community participation
a. Establishing community groups
b. Giving training for PPN members, including organizational and management training that later expected to increase their capacity in functioning their organization as place for the community to have social institution and to implement their work plan.
c. Field meeting and evaluation
2. Rehabilitating 5 hectares mangrove area (Pilot Project)
a. Mapping by using participatory method that involve community represented by PPN, women group, local government, academicians, and other related parties.
b. Planning on Analysis Area and Reviewing Planning Area that will involve community, represented by PPN, women group, local government, academicians, and other related parties.
c. Rehabilitating forest and coastal area by community, local government, and related parties.
d. Performing participatory field study regarding biodiversities by involving community, especially PPN members that later manage KBD.
3. Increasing living standard of Sei Berombang village community.
a. Utilizing resources from mangrove forest to add their living standard such as by using mangrove leaves as mangrove tea and sell it to wider community
b. Creating mangrove seeding garden
c. The two above activities become the entry point in building micro credit union for Sei Berombang village that later expected to manage sea resources in micro economic level such as producing shrimp crackers, Pandan leaves floor mat, etc.

1. Indirect beneficiaries: community living in surrounding Sei Berombang mangrove forest: ± 800 household
2. Direct beneficiaries: members of PPN ± 350 persons and women group ± 30 persons
